Acer announces Aspire M3 and Aspire V5 laptops with touchscreens

In case you haven't noticed, there are two kinds of Windows 8 devices on display at IFA this week: laptop / tablet hybrids, and already-announced laptops, refreshed to include touchscreens. Acer's newest two Ultrabooks fall into that second category: the company just announced touch-enabled versions of its Aspire M3 Ultrabook and Aspire V5 thin-and-light. For now, Acer isn't saying a word about price or availability, so for now you'll have to be content with a few spec details, all embedded after the break.

Update: We've added some more pictures of Acer's new touch-friendly Ultrabooks in the flesh.

CONVENTION WATCH: Convention kiss, praising mom

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Around the 2012 Republican National Convention and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details to you:

__

THERE HE IS

The song playing was "My Girl" by The Temptations as Mitt Romney made his first appearance at the Republican National Convention to congratulate his wife, Ann, after her speech Tuesday night.

They kissed. He grinned. She grinned. The crowd roared. The whole thing lasted less than 30 seconds. And the newly minted GOP presidential nominee was gone ? at least for the moment.

? Ted Anthony ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/anthonyted

___

THEY GOT THE MEMO

The GOP convention's Tuesday theme is "We Built It," and nearly every speaker is hitting that note.

A sampling:

"Mitt Romney was not handed success. He built it." ? Ann Romney, wife of the nominee.

"No guarantees. No government there to hold your hand. Just a dream and the desire to do better. President Obama doesn't get this. He can't fix the economy because he doesn't know how it was built." ? House Speaker John Boehner.

"They tell us we didn't build our businesses. That somebody else made it happen. They tell us not to dream, but to settle. You and I know America is better than that." ? Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval.

"Big government didn't build America: You built America! Small businesses don't come out of Washington, D.C., pre-made on flatbed trucks." ? Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.

? Connie Cass ?Twitter http://twitter.com/ConnieCass

___

HONORING MOM

Directly on the heels of Ann Romney's outreach to women, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is crafting his speech, too, around a woman ? his mother.

Christie says it was his mother who taught him the key lessons of life ? including, Christie says, that sometimes it's more important to be respected than loved. Christie said his mother was the family's enforcer.

The Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, is believed to be lagging President Barack Obama in gaining women's votes. It's probably no coincidence that so much focus on this key night of the Republican convention is devoted to praising ? indeed, lauding ? strong women.

? Sally Buzbee

___

WE BUILT IT

Two business people who spoke to the Republican convention's "we built it" theme also received some help from Uncle Sam.

Phil Archuletta of New Mexico-based P&M Signs assailed the Obama administration for nearly "putting us out of business" because of changes in procurement rules. He also lamented that "nothing happened" from his requests for stimulus money. A review of government data found P&M Signs received more than $340,000 in federal stimulus contracts under President Barack Obama.

Another speaker, Sher Valenzuela, took aim at government involvement in business. She received $17 million in federal contracts and loans, the liberal watchdog Media Matters first reported Tuesday.

One of the convention's themes is that small-business owners created their success through their own hard work, not by reliance on government. It's a dig at Obama's much-maligned remarks that entrepreneurs rely on government-supported infrastructure that they "didn't build."

QUICKQUOTE: CHRIS CHRISTIE

"I don't want my children and grandchildren to have to read in a history book what it was like to live in an American Century." ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, delivering the keynote speech Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention.

ANN ON MITT

"This man will not fail." ? Ann Romney, on her husband.

___

SANTORUM GLIMPSES

In a tightly controlled convention, there are surprisingly few echoes or reminders of the long and sometimes chaotic Republican primary fight that dominated political news coverage in the first part of the year. But former Sen. Rick Santorum's speech gave a rare flashback to that primary fight.

On a night when many speakers focused on the ailing economy and how to best fix it, Santorum took a different tack and focused mostly on social issues such as single parenthood, the Education Department and welfare. Another reminder of those winter and early spring primaries: the proud smiles of two of his daughters ? so often seen as the daughters stood behind him as he talked.

This time, the daughters were in the audience, but their proud, fond smiles as their father spoke were a vivid reminder of the primary days.

? Sally Buzbee

___

JUST HANGING AROUND

The balloons are ready.

They won't fall to the convention floor in vivid red, blue and white disarray until Mitt Romney gives his acceptance speech on Thursday night. But they're waiting ? tied up in big nets hanging high from the ceiling of the Forum in Tampa where Republican National Convention delegates are meeting.

Volunteers helped tie the balloons and lifted them to the ceiling before the convention started. Nestled among them are some huge, white beach ball-looking balloons ? it will be interesting to see how those fall.

? Sally Buzbee

______

QUICKQUOTE: ANN ROMNEY

"We're too smart to know there aren't easy answers. But we're not dumb enough to accept that there aren't better answers. And that is where this boy I met at a high school dance comes in. His name is Mitt Romney and you should really get to know him." ? Ann Romney, in her convention address, speaking about her husband.

___

ENCOURAGING WORDS

A quick exchange between Mitt and Ann Romney, at their hotel before they left for the convention hall:

Mitt Romney: "Break a leg ? you'll do great"

Ann Romney: "I am excited. I am not nervous."

___

FADING DREAM?

The Republican Party's convention speeches are putting emphasis on restoring the American Dream. People's faith in the concept does seem to be fading.

A Pew Research Center poll released Monday found 63 percent say "most people who want to get ahead can make it if they're willing to work hard," down from a high of 74 percent in 1999.

Another third say hard work is no guarantee of success.

? Jennifer Agiesta ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jennagiesta

___

ROMNEY ALL BUT IGNORED

The rivalry between Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney calmed enough for Romney to give his one-time bitter rival a speaking slot at his nominating convention. It didn't calm enough for Santorum to have much positive to say about his Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee.

Santorum, the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who was the final obstacle between Romney and enough delegates to capture the nomination, only mentioned Romney at the tail end of his speech on the first night of the party's convention. Judging from his speech, he still doesn't have a lot good to say about the man he once called "''the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama."

Santorum's speech script ran 1,150 words before he uttered Romney's name.

After? Just 28 words were scripted before Santorum exited the stage.

? Philip Elliott ? Twitter http://twitter.com/philip_elliott

___

'WE DIDN'T LET GO'

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum told the story of his 4-year-old daughter Bella, born with a serious genetic condition. Doctors advised the Santorums that Bella wouldn't live long and they should "prepare to let her go."

"We didn't let go, and today Bella is full of life and she has made our lives and countless others much more worth living," he said.

In his speech to the Republican convention, the former presidential candidate related Bella's story to the party's anti-abortion stance:

"I thank God that America still has one party that reaches out their hands in love to lift up all of God's children ? born and unborn ? and says that each of us has dignity and all of us have the right to live the American Dream."

? Connie Cass ?Twitter http://twitter.com/ConnieCass

___

WHAT THE CAMERA DOESN'T SHOW

Ever wonder what really happens on the floor during a political convention? Is everyone really sitting there rapt, hanging on the speaker of the hour's every word.

No, actually. Big parts of the convention are taken up by kibitzing. It's the real action at conventions.

True, the delegates do pay attention to the speeches, and they cheer especially when a particularly good speaker comes on or when it's someone from their home state. But the aisles are also thronged with people talking, catching up with friends or buttonholing officials to get their ear.

And the walkways behind the arena are even busier ? filled with people chatting, arranging meetings, grabbing food and looking for famous faces.

And unlike a basketball or hockey game, almost no one ever shouts "down in front."

? Sally Buzbee

___

'I SHOOK THE HAND OF THE AMERICAN DREAM'

Rick Santorum, the candidate who waged the most persistent challenge to Mitt Romney's nomination, says campaigning across America convinced him the American Dream can be restored:

"Why? I held its hand. I shook the hand of the American Dream. And it has a strong grip," Santorum told the Republican National Convention.

"I shook hands of farmers and ranchers who made America the bread basket of the world. ...

"I grasped dirty hands with scars that come from years of labor in the oil and gas fields, mines and mills. ...

"I clasped hands of men and women in uniform and their families. Hands that sacrifice and risk all to protect and keep us free. ....

"I held hands that are in want. Hands looking for the dignity of a good job, hands growing weary of not finding one but refusing to give up hope."

? Connie Cass ?Twitter http://twitter.com/ConnieCass

___

THE NON-EVENT?

Media strategist Fred Davis, who advised GOP Sen. John McCain in his 2008 presidential run, remembers watching the conventions with his parents "until my eyes couldn't stay open any longer." They were highly scripted even back then, but they somehow felt like more of an "event."

This year, Davis didn't even bother leaving his Santa Barbara, Calif., home to attend the Republican National Convention

"It's not getting more intimate," he says. "It's getting less."

Davis says the "worst speech I ever gave in my life" was one he delivered to a high school in Tulsa, Okla. His mistake: Working from a text.

Davis says making someone like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie work with a teleprompter in Tampa, Fla., "strikes me as a mistake."

"You have one of the great from-the-heart speakers in the world," he says. "Chris Christie will do fine, because he's a very skilled orator. But it won't be what it could have been ... and the reason is they want to control every word that he says."

? Allen G. Breed ? Twitter http://twitter.com/AllenGBreed

___

WALKER LOVE

Some Republican office holders are more popular than others with their party.

Each speaker Tuesday night got enthusiastic applause. But as Gov Scott Walker of Wisconsin took the stage, the Forum in Tampa erupted into a standing ovation. Walker is a hero to his party and to conservatives nationwide after surviving a recall effort in his state in a bitter fight with Democrats. Walker tussled with Democrats in his state over multiple issues, including collective bargaining rights for public employees.

EMPTY STREETS

Downtown Tampa business owners once saw the Republican National Convention as an opportunity to make a profit. Now they're just hoping to break even.

That's because Tampa's streets are deserted, its restaurants nearly empty, thanks to a delay in convention activities caused by nasty weather, and tight security that makes getting around downtown akin to navigating a labyrinth.

"This has been a ghost town," business owner Jeff Morzella said Tuesday, standing outside his restaurant named FRESH.

Streets surrounding his locale were barricaded. The biggest source of downtown traffic for the past few days has been police officers on bicycles, but they have been eating at meal stations catered by outsiders, not local restaurants, Morzella said. Still, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is optimistic that by the end of the week, economic gains will outweigh losses.

"I think when we're all said and done with this, this will have a huge economic impact on the city," he said.

___

IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH

Americans listening to Ann Romney's speech Tuesday night may relate to her story of love and its challenges.

Though the share of Americans who are married has declined in the last half century, many have found wedded happiness and see love as the central feature of a marriage. A 2010 Pew Research Center/Time poll found that 93 percent of married adults said love was a vital reason they got married. And most single Americans said love was the most important reason to get married. In that same year's General Social Survey, 63 percent of married people described their marriages as "very happy."

Married women typically make up about a third of voters in presidential election years, according to exit polling. In 2008, they broke 51 percent for John McCain to 47 percent for Barack Obama. The group last supported a Democrat in 1996, when 48 percent backed Clinton, 43 percent Dole and 7 percent Perot. Unmarried women, though, break solidly in favor of Democrats: Seventy percent of them backed Obama in 2008.

Mrs. Romney's experience with breast cancer could resonate with a sizable share of the public as well. A Gallup/USA Today poll in 2011 found that 78 percent of Americans know someone who has had breast cancer. Nearly half of women have either had the disease themselves or seen a close friend or family member fall victim.

? Jennifer Agiesta ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jennagiesta

___

'A REAL MARRIAGE'

Ann Romney will take to the Republican National Convention stage to proclaim her marriage is just like everyone else's ? contrary to glamorous depictions she's seen written about her and her husband.

"A storybook marriage? No, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage," she says in excerpts of her speech released before its delivery later Tuesday. "At every turn in his life, this man I met at a high school dance, has helped lift up others."

In the fairytales she's read, Romney said, there were never "long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once. And those storybooks never seemed to have chapters called 'MS'" ? multiple sclerosis ? "or 'Breast Cancer.'"

? Jack Gillum ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jackgillum

___

THE ALSO-RANS

They're long gone from the presidential race, but not totally forgotten.

Jon Huntsman picked up a delegate from Texas during Tuesday's roll call of states.

So did Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum.

Even Buddy Roemer ? the little-noticed candidate who ran this year first as a Republican, then as an independent ? was rewarded with a single delegate when Texas doled out its votes.

Despite the hard-fought primary, Bachmann, for her part, professed no hard feelings.

"Congratulations to (at)MittRomney, Republican Nominee for President!" she wrote on Twitter, minutes after Romney officially clinched the nomination.

? Josh Lederman ? Twitter http://twitter.com/joshledermanAP

__

ROMNEY THE NOMINEE

The state of Alabama pronounced itself "on the move." American Samoa touted itself as "the only American soil in the Southern Hemisphere."

They and more than 30 of the union's other states and territories have already cast their delegates to Mitt Romney, and at this moment ? just over two months before Election Day ? he has been officially nominated as the Republican Party's presidential candidate.

New Jersey was the state that put Romney over the top. Romney is expected to accept the nomination Thursday night on the Republican convention's final night.

Shuffler.fm Brings Its ?Flipboard For Music? Service To iPhone, Offers Sneak Peek At Spotify App

Screen shot 2012-08-29 at 8.28.38 PMAs the Web is stuffed with more and more content, we're increasingly in need of good curators to help us discover the things we'll love amidst the noise. Flipboard, for one, rose to popularity by transforming your favorite digital news sources into a socially-curated mobile magazine. Shuffler.fm is on a mission to do the same for music discovery, combining Flipboard's successful formula with a little Pandora and a little ex.fm. The result is what the Amsterdam-based startup is calling a "radiozine" -- a music discovery guide that turns the industry's popular blogs and websites into mobile radio stations. Launching its iPad app in November, Shuffler.fm aggregates content from a long list of mainstream and niche music sites, allowing users to peruse, discover and listen to tunes based on genre, style and what's trending. And now Shuffler is spreading to the rest of iOS, bringing its radiozine-style music discovery service to the iPhone and iPod Touch, along with giving us a sneak peek at the debut of its Spotify app.

Prosecutors seek Colorado shooting suspect's notes

DENVER (AP) ? Prosecutors in the Colorado movie theater mass shooting trial will attempt to convince a judge Thursday that investigators should have access to the suspect's notebook, which they think contains descriptions of a violent attack.

Defense attorneys for James Holmes, charged in the July shootings that killed 12 people and wounded 58 others at a midnight screening of the latest Batman movie, say the notes should be off-limits.

Holmes' attorneys say their client sent the journal to a psychiatrist he was seeing at the University of Colorado, Denver, where he was a studying neuroscience. They say the notebook is inadmissible because it's protected by doctor-patient privacy laws.

Prosecutors argue they should be allowed to review the notes as part of their investigation. Legal experts say district attorneys could offer several arguments, including an attempt to prove Holmes already mentioned the notebook, either during questioning or to professors or other students in emails, voiding any legal privacy protections.

Judge William B. Sylvester seems inclined to listen to their point of view, ruling Monday that issues regarding "a serious threat of imminent physical violence" are not protected by privilege.

Holmes is charged with multiple counts of first degree murder. He is not required to enter a plea until after a November hearing. Holmes' attorneys could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial or that he's not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys are under a gag order and cannot discuss details of the case.

Holmes was expected in court Thursday, and the psychiatrist, Lynne Fenton, could be called to testify. Calls to Fenton's attorneys, who were hired by the university, were not returned.

Another argument to open the notes to investigators, experts say, is a challenge to whether Fenton was treating Holmes at the time he sent the notebook.

Holmes left the school without explanation weeks before the mass shooting in which he is accused. Fenton sent Holmes' case to the school's Behavioral Evaluation and Threat Assessment Team, but the unit didn't take action because he already had taken steps to withdraw from the university, KMGH-TV reported on Aug. 1, citing unnamed sources.

School officials have refused comment, citing the judge's gag order.

The hearing could provide more insight to a possible defense strategy for Holmes based on his mental health. Defense attorney Daniel King told the court on Aug. 9 that Holmes is mentally ill and requested information held by prosecutors to determine "the nature and depth of Mr. Holmes' mental illness."

The judge's order regarding imminent violence was one of a few key developments in the case this week, including prosecutors gaining access to some of Holmes' educational records.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Pearson said the records show planning and motive. In court documents, Pearson said that Holmes made a threat to a student in March, failed a key exam in June and was denied access to the school after threatening a professor.

Pearson said Holmes' educational records help show "dissatisfaction with what occurred in his life" and his failing academic career before the shootings as a possible motive.

Defense attorneys are seeking sanctions for prosecutors for "reckless disregard for the truth," though it's unclear whether Pearson's statements regarding threats or a possible motive are the basis for the request.

A hearing on the matter will be scheduled later.

Bow Hunting - An Ancient Art For Hunting Game

By Anonymous on Aug 23, 2012 12:53 pm

The ancient art of bow hunting is still widely used today in many countries around the world. Hunting large game animals such as deer and elk with a recurve bow and arrows has maintained it's unique popularity throughout the ages only to emerge today as one of the most popular styles among hunters. Compared to hunting with rifles, which is considered the long distance method, bow hunting requires much more skill and cunning. The bow hunter has to use stealth and stalking techniques that will enable him to get within close proximity to the wild game without alarming it so he can launch an arrow accurately enough to kill it.

Rabbi Meir Solovetichik Will Open GOP ... - Yeshiva World News

The following is via the NY Times:

The Republican Party does not often mention New York City as the place it turns to for religious guidance. But this year, New Yorkers will give both the opening and the closing prayers at the Republican National Convention, in a quirk of timing that nevertheless highlights the increased importance the party is placing on appealing to Jewish and Catholic voters.

Rabbi Meir Y. Soloveichik, 35, will deliver the opening prayer on Tuesday, taking the stage in Tampa, Fla., right after the national anthem. A grandson and grand nephew of renowned Orthodox rabbis, he directs the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University in Manhattan, whose mission is ?bridging the intellectual heritage of Judaism with the great ideas that have shaped the world,? he said in an interview on Monday.

?To me, this is really an extraordinary honor and a privilege, both as an American and a Jew, to be invited to give a prayer at what is really a cherished ritual of American democracy,? he said.

Geek at Heart: walking for aerobics

I love walking.

That?s my aerobic exercise, walking. Adding aerobic exercise or ?cardio? to your workout routine has numerous health benefits including building endurance and strengthening your heart, reducing the risk of heart attacks and high blood pressure. Aerobic workouts also help you burn calories and lose weight. Other forms of aerobic exercise include but are not limited to jogging, running, cycling, swimming, and so on.

Aerobic exercise is physical exercise of relatively low intensity. You should be able to carry out short conversations while doing aerobic exercise. If you are having trouble getting enough air while you?re talking, you are most likely performing anaerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise is medium to high intensity exercise that concentrates on building strength, speed and power. In some cases anaerobic exercise occurs simultaneously with aerobic exercise.

I carry stress in the muscles surrounding and associated with my spine, when affected I get incredibly tense and painful. Sometimes I?ve had to start walking slow until the muscles start to relax and pick up speed as I go. No matter how I feel when I first start walking, I always feel great when I?m finished. I suggest cardio for at least 20 to 30 minutes three to five times a week.

Isaac disrupts presidential election campaign

TAMPA (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac nudged the presidential election campaign off course, forcing Republicans to delay the start of Mitt Romney's national convention in Florida and Vice President Joe Biden to cancel a campaign trip to the state.

The prospect of howling winds and flooding around the convention site near Tampa Bay prompted organizers to cancel Monday's scheduled events and try to squeeze as many activities into three days as had been planned for four.

Facing a stormy forecast, Republicans this week are to formally nominate Romney and vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan as their candidates to face Democratic President Barack Obama and Biden in the November 6 election.

The Republican convention, just like the Democrats' similar gathering in Charlotte early next month, is typically a celebratory event bringing together thousands of party activists from across the United States for a week of speeches, partying and strategizing.

But the Republicans now face the possibility of grappling with a potential natural disaster in a major battleground state that Romney needs to win in order to deny Obama a second term. This means any celebrations must be tempered with concern for those affected by Isaac.

The importance of the convention for Romney cannot be overstated. Running either even with Obama or slightly behind him, Romney needs a bounce in the polls from the convention. He needs to convince Americans that he is a viable alternative to the incumbent Democrat, and his big week, culminating with a speech on Thursday, needs as few distractions as possible.

Tropical Storm Isaac storm has pummeled Haiti, killing at least six people and has now moved on to Cuba.

Fueled by warm Gulf waters, Isaac is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds and hit the U.S. Gulf coast somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and New Orleans around midweek.

Officials expect to have a better idea of how badly the storm will impact the Tampa area by Sunday.

SAFETY FIRST

"The Republican convention is going to take place. We know that we will officially nominate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan," said Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee. He said party officials were working with Florida state officials and emergency management to ensure the safety of everyone attending the convention.

Russ Schriefer, a representative from the Romney campaign, said they would adjust times and try to fit in as many speakers as possible in three days instead of the planned four-day event.

"I think the important thing is that, even as ... the days will be abbreviated ... we'll absolutely be able to get our message out," Schriefer said.

"We have the opportunity to tell the American people the story of the last four years, how President Obama's failed leadership has failed this country and how Mitt Romney ... can provide a better future for Americans."

The Republican convention will bring 50,000 visitors to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, home to well over 4 million people. Over the last few days, local authorities have said they could handle the crowds and the approaching storm.

Many attendees booked earlier flights to be in place before any bad weather. Hotels said they were ready to shift party schedules or move outdoor events indoors.

The last Republican convention, in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2008 was also delayed a day due to a storm. That year, Hurricane Gustav hit the Louisiana coast as the convention was set to nominate Senator John McCain as the Republican nominee.

The party, still reeling from criticism of Republican President George W. Bush's handling of devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, rushed to delay the meeting out of respect for Gustav's victims.

Convention president Bill Harris said the party was ready operationally for events in Tampa to begin but they were acting out of an "abundance of caution" because of the uncertainty of the weather.

"I want to make sure everyone who attends the convention is safe and everyone who lives in Florida is not unnecessarily injured by any activities taking place when a storm threatens," Harris said.

Biden, who had planned to visit Florida during the convention but who had already canceled his Tampa event because of the storm, has decided to also cancel his other events in Orlando and St. Augustine.

Before The Morning: BIG NEWS!

God is so good and big and faithful and amazing.

I just finished Beth Moore's Believing God study, and in one session she talks about us reaching our Gilgal. Gilgal means "circle" and was the name of the first place the Israelites camped when they came into the promised land. Beth talked about God bringing them full circle out of their Egyptian captivity and into their promised land.... saying that we all have a promised land, but unbelief is often the biggest obstacle keeping us from it.

Anyway, after we had to say no the boys' placement in our home (and felt clarity that it was a definite no), I was so sad, mad, and confused. Why Lord? Why would you let us get that call? Why would you let our family be chosen? Why would you let us love them in our hearts for a week, and then when finally meeting them, have us say no? Why, Lord?

That was on a Tuesday. On Thursday, I went to my girls' bible study, and we watched the last Believing God session, and it seemed (even to the other women in the room) that everything Beth said applied to me and my heartbreak.

Phrases like:
- Anything that waits, it's because God has something better for us.
- Wrestle a thing out. We run a race well, not by refusing to wrestle, but by keeping the faith during the fight.
- Continue to believe, even when God doesn't answer the way we expect.
- Faith always receives. (Eph 1:18-20)
- Faith soon sees. (1 Cor 13, 2 Tim 4:6)
- God is a can-do, able God, with an outstretched arm. He is powerful and he loves.
- IT HAS PURPOSE.

A week later, this past Thursday, Matt and I got a call about a newborn legal-risk placement that needed to be discharged to a foster family from the hospital. We brought him home on Friday. It is very likely that we will be able to adopt him and he'll be ours for forever, but it could take a year (or more?). We have a long road ahead, many fears to pray through and face, and a hard journey. There is still risk. But we step out on faith, and we are going to love Baby G with all our hearts. And trust God to do his thing.

I BELIEVE.

And oh, the purpose of our experience with the boys? The toddler boys' social worker is also the social worker for Baby G. After choosing us for the boys and it not working out, when she got the call about this baby, she immediately chose us to be his family. Had the whole situation and heartbreak of not being able to bring the toddler boys home never happened, this social worker would have never known we even existed.

FAITH SOON SEES.

I am in tears at the faithfulness and love of my God. He is so good, y'all. Even when we can't see. Even when we're in the dark and can't see the why or the purpose or the good in it all. Just keep believing him to be good, faithful, and BIG.

IT HAS PURPOSE.

Big names of GOP left offstage, and not by accident

Some of the biggest names in politics will be missing from the stage during the Republican National Convention this week in Tampa, and that?s no accident. The Mitt Romney campaign is aiming to focus squarely on President Obama?s record and the GOP future rather than on polarizing figures and controversies from the past.

The idea is to portray a competent, forward-looking party?and that has translated into leaving out a recent president and vice president, some tea party stars, and most of the Republicans who only months ago were fighting Romney for the nomination. The absent former rivals include Rep. Michele Bachmann, who won the Iowa straw poll in 2011; former pizza magnate Herman Cain, who once led national polls during the primary race; Texas Gov. Rick Perry, viewed as a juggernaut before he ran; and retiring Rep. Ron Paul, who is getting a video tribute but no live address.

Also missing from the podium, and the convention as well: Former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney. Bush and Cheney represent a decade of GOP dominance that voters don?t remember fondly. Even Republicans have been highly critical of deficit spending and bailouts during the Bush-Cheney years.

The two decided separately not to attend. They probably realized the ramifications of showing up, said Al Cardenas, chairman of the American Conservative Union. ?The leaders of the party from the last decade agree it?s in the party?s best interest to move forward,? he said.

Almost all of these no-shows have national favorability ratings in the 20s and 30s. That includes former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who made an electric convention debut four years ago as the GOP vice presidential pick but won?t be onstage this year. Her absence, along with that of Cain, Bachmann, Donald Trump, and other tea party favorites, has not gone unnoticed. The conservative group TheTeaParty.net has asked conservatives to sign a petition condemning convention organizers for what they call a blatant and outrageous attempt ?to silence TEA PARTY voices and ignore the historic success of the Tea Party since 2009.?

Convention organizers are clearly aiming for the preferred audience in a new National Journal Convention Insiders Poll, in which 71 percent of Republican Insiders said it was more important for the convention to appeal to swing voters. Only 22 percent said it was more important to energize the base. Perhaps even more relevant for GOP planners: In an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll last month, only 25 percent of Americans said they supported the tea party; 65 percent said they did not.

(Some Democrats, of course, will also be notably absent in Charlotte next week, including former Vice President Al Gore and former presidential contender Michael Dukakis. But Bill Clinton will speak just before President Obama accepts his renomination. And in 2008, even after Hillary Rodham Clinton?s long, hard primary fight against Obama, both Clintons spoke at the convention in a show of party unity?after Obama had chosen another rival, Joe Biden, as his running mate.)

The GOP nomination fight was a free-for-all of charges and countercharges. ?It was a bruising primary, a roller-coaster primary where some very nasty words were exchanged,? said Ron Bonjean, a Republican strategist. For instance, Perry saying Romney had practiced ?vulture capitalism,? Gingrich?s never-ending complaints that Romney and his allies were buying the election, and former Sen. Rick Santorum?s assertion that Romney was ?the worst Republican in the country to put up against Obama.?

Bonjean said putting former rivals onstage would make them look hypocritical after all that. But Santorum nevertheless scored a speaking role this week, and Gingrich did as well. A revised schedule issued on Sunday shows him slotted for an appearance with his wife on Thursday night. The rest of Romney?s onetime competitors? No go.

A Reminder of the Importance of Emergency Medical and Medical ...

A Toronto woman recently suffered a serious head injury after falling overboard a catamaran while on vacation in Croatia. The 24-year old woman, Anna Leibenko, is in a coma and on life support in a Croatian hospital.

Anna did not have travel insurance and her family cannot afford her medical bills or evacuation costs to get her home. Her brother launched a social media campaign to raise the necessary funds to bring her back to Canada, which could amount to over $100,000.

This story is an unfortunate reminder of the importance of emergency medical?and evacuation insurance while traveling overseas. More information about Anna and the effort to get her home can be found here.

Centenarian sister helps Sardinian siblings set world record

Nine Sardinians were recognized Wednesday as the oldest living siblings, with a combined age of 818. The eldest sister celebrated her 105th birthday today.

By Nick Squires,?Correspondent / August 22, 2012

Could the rugged Mediterranean island of Sardinia harbor the secret to a long life? Experts increasingly think so.

The island has long had a reputation for longevity, with one of the highest rates of centenarians in the world. Now that reputation has been further bolstered with the discovery of nine elderly brothers and sisters who have a combined age of 818 years.

The Melis siblings were officially recognized this week by Guinness World Records?as the world?s oldest living siblings.

It can surely only be a matter of time before ?The Sardinian Diet? becomes the next big thing among Hollywood stars and well-heeled health enthusiasts.

All but two of the siblings live in the village of Perdasdefogu in a mountainous region of the island known as the Barbagia, which in the past was famed for banditry, feuding, and kidnapping.

Its unforgiving terrain has repelled outside invaders since pre-Roman times, ensuring a distinct gene pool that appears to have passed on longevity from generation to generation.

The Melis family ascribes its extraordinarily long lives to plenty of exercise ? walking up and down precipitous slopes to feed its sheep and goats, for instance ? as well as a healthy diet based around bread, cheese and pasta, all locally produced. ?

Family members speak particularly highly of minestrone soup, which is filling but low in fat and full of greens. The red wine they drink is unusually high in antioxidants, experts have found.

Being surrounded by around 150 children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren also keeps them young, they say.

The oldest of the siblings, Consolata, celebrated her 105th birthday today, while the ?baby? of the family, Mafalda, is a comparatively sprightly 78 years old.

?In my day women had to do all the domestic work, going to the standpipe to get water and to the river to wash the clothes. My grandchildren have washing machines and vacuum cleaners so when they say 'I?m so stressed,' I just can?t understand it,? Consolata told Italy?s daily Corriere della Sera.

One of the sisters, Claudina, 99, keeps in shape by walking to and from church every day, while a brother, Adolfo, 89, still works in a bar in the village and tends vegetables in his garden.

It was a family friend who approached Guinness claiming that the Melis siblings were probably the oldest in the world.

Guinness verified the claim in conjunction with the Gerontology Research Group in the US and announced the finding this week.

?The Mediterranean lifestyle is always held up as being beneficial to a long, healthy life, and Italians in particular feature prominently in the list of supercentenarians and centenarians,? said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief for Guinness World Records.

?Seven out of the 70 people alive over the age of 110 are Italian, for example, and the world's second-oldest living person is the Italy-born Dina Manfredini, who was born in Emilia-Romagna," Mr. Glenday noted, adding that Ms. Manfredini now lives in the US.

?With all longevity records, genes and lifestyle are paramount, but luck plays a big part ? avoiding accidents and falls, and so on ? so to have such a large number of living siblings with an average age of more than 90 years is incredibly rare.??

The secret of Sardinians? long life is being studied by a scientific project called AKeA ? an acronym for ?A kent? annos,? a traditional toast in the Sardinian language which means ?May you live to 100 years.?

Scientists believe genetics play a key role in Sardinians? longevity ? the same surnames crop up again and again in the list of long-living islanders, said Luca Deiana, a professor of clinical biochemistry from the University of Sassari.

The only other region in the world that can match Sardinia for the proportion of centenarians is the island of Okinawa in Japan.

Snoring Dormouse with Sound - Listen

Snoring Dormouse with Sound - Listen

Don't worry, he's okay! He's just sleeping. He's a dormouse. In winter, dormice hibernate in nests beneath the fallen leaves on the ground. When they wake up in spring, they build woven nests of honeysuckle bark and fresh leaves in the undergrowth. If the weather is cold and wet, and food scarce, they save energy by going into 'torpor' -- they curl up into a ball and go to sleep. In fact, in Britain the dormouse may spend up to three quarters of its life asleep, either hibernating in winter or in torpor during summer. It is believed their name comes from the Anglo-Norman word dormeus, meaning "sleepy (one)". This evolved to become dormouse even though they are more closely related to squirrels. As autumn comes, they prepare for hibernation by fattening up on nuts and berries. Then around the time of the first frost, when the temperatures fall below 15 oC, their metabolism shuts down and they find a secure, dry place to build a nest and sleep. During hibernation they lose about a quarter of their body weight. There's also some great footage here: http://bbc.in/xAjHEy They don't actually sound like this in hibernation, so don't worry. The normal sound is a high-pitched 'peep'. This is an audio enhanced version of some lovely footage taken by Surrey Wildlife Trust Mammal Project Officer, Dave Williams. You can help the Surrey Wildlife Trust in their work to protect endangered dormice and other wildlife by giving a donation. Click here: http://bit.ly/AfDNLk
