NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) ? Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger has died at age 86.

The newspaper reported that his family said Sulzberger died Saturday at his home in Southampton, N.Y., after a long illness. He had retired in 1992 after three decades at the paper?s helm and was succeeded by his son, Arthur Jr.

Sulzberger?s family has controlled the newspaper since his grandfather Arthur Ochs acquired it in 1896.

The company has struggled in recent years but during Sulzberger?s tenure it reached new levels of influence and profit.

The newspaper won 31 Pulitzer prizes, published the Pentagon Papers and won a libel case victory in New York Times vs. Sullivan that established important First Amendment protections for the press.

In a note to New York Times employees obtained by the Poynter Institute, Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said ?Punch,? as his father was known, ?always believed that by closely adhering to our Company?s most fundamental precepts we would greatly enhance our ability to produce outstanding journalism.?

?Punch will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends, but we can take some comfort in the fact that his legacy and his abiding belief in the value of quality news and information will always be with us,? Sulzberger wrote.

Obama mixes debate preparation with fundraising

(AP) ? President Barack Obama warned Democrats about becoming too complacent with six weeks left before the election. He joked that Democrats tend to believe that the "sky is falling" or that "everything is great."

"This is going to be a close race right down to the wire," he told about 90 donors gathered Friday evening at the Washington home of Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat.

The president's remarks came amid public polls that show him gaining advantages in some key battleground states. It also came months after anxious Democrats worried that Obama would not be able to keep up with Republican rival Mitt Romney's fundraising.

In a day partly devoted to a fundraising blitz for himself and other Democrats, Obama also offered themes of political unity, telling another group of donors that the nation is "not as divided as the pundits make it seem."

"I don't know how many folks will vote for me this time around," Obama told an afternoon audience of donors at a hotel near the White House. "But I say the same thing to them (as in 2008): I will be your president, too."

"I'm not fighting to create Democrat or Republican jobs," he added. "I'm fighting to create American jobs."

Obama continued to seize on a leaked video in which Romney said that 47 percent of people "will vote for the president no matter what." Romney described them as people who pay no federal income tax and "believe that they are victims."

Obama spoke at the first of three fundraisers after another Friday afternoon of debate prep at Democratic National Committee headquarters. He will face off against Romney in Denver on Wednesday.

The afternoon fundraiser at the Capital Hilton drew an estimated 700 guests with tickets starting at $250.

Tickets for the event at Rockefeller's home cost $20,000 per person.

The final fundraiser, back at the Hilton, drew an estimated 200 people who paid $2,500 or more to attend. The money was set for Obama's campaign, the Democratic National Committee and state Democratic parties.

"If you guys have written all the checks you can," Obama told donors at the final event, "go find some friends."

Original 2007 Google-powered iPhone maps app reportedly built by 2 engineers in 3 weeks

I've read more than I ever wanted to about maps this week, but this story about how the original, Google-powered Maps.app was built for the original iPhone caught my attention. Here it s from Nick Wingfield and Brian X. Chen of The New York Times:

Including a maps app on the first iPhone was not even part of the company?s original plan as the phone?s unveiling approached in January 2007. Just weeks before the event, Mr. Jobs ordered a mapping app to show off the capabilities of the touch-screen device.

Two engineers put together a maps app for the presentation in three weeks, said a former Apple engineer who worked on iPhone software, and who declined to be named because he did not want to speak publicly about his previous employer. The company hastily cut a deal with Google to use its map data.

2 engineers. 3 weeks. Apple has spent the last year or more and who knows how many engineering hours trying to roll a new maps app. It looks nice, but iOS 6 Maps currently locates my house in the middle of a park, when I try to find a place to get my car rust proofed -- because winter is coming -- I get the wrong area code and a phone number that consists only of 443-0, and if I want to take a train downtown I suddenly need to buy an app for that.

Yet in 2007 Google's data was good enough for 2 Apple engineers to make a decent, if feature limited iPhone app in 3 weeks. That just goes to show you how important data quality is for something like maps, and how little a nice looking interface matters when you can't find something on it.

Apple's CEO, Tim Cook has already apologized for the current status of iOS 6 Maps, but not for taking away Google's much more reliable data. I don't expect him to either, any more than I expect Apple to apologize for dumping Safari RSS or X11.

People keep saying iOS 6 Maps will get better just by virtue of all of us using it. I'll correct my house, and use Google to find and correct the phone number of the anti-rust place (no idea how I can help fix the lack of train information though...) But it's going to take a lot more than me, or any of us, simply feeding Apple data to make a proper maps app. It's going to take Apple investing as heavily and determinedly as Google has over the last decade, but doing it much, much, much faster. It's going to take tons of money and a Herculean effort. Apple has tons of money. Let's hope Cook and company are serious about putting in the effort.

Until Apple mapping data is at least good enough for 2 engineers to build a pretty good app out of it in just 3 weeks...

Wall-Ye robot does grunt work at vineyards

7 hrs.

Winemaking is the latest industry to be hit by robot?fever: French inventors have created a robot that rolls among the grapevines, checking and perhaps pruning as it goes.

A wine grower in France complained three years ago to?Christophe Millot that they were always short on staff. Millot designed the Wall-Ye robot, which is indeed named after Pixar's trash-collecting WALL-E, and the pair have been working together on it ever since.

Wall-Ye moves around on treads and is equipped with a number of cameras for navigation and inspection of vines.?It navigates by GPS, but also recognizes each plant individually and can carry out?special instructions or follow up on previous work.

There are plans to make it able to prune vines and eventually pick grapes, but for now it is limited to less complicated tasks. But checking for bugs, disease, temperature variations and soil problems are important parts of running a vineyard ? and they can be tedious.

Another winemaker, Claire Gazeau-Montrasi, explains in the AFP video above?that she would welcome a robot that took care of the most boring jobs. Like a Roomba or similar household robot, it can do its job slowly but surely, working around its owner's schedule.

At ?25,000, or around $32,000, Wall-Ye isn't cheap, though there are larger and more expensive systems that are capable of more. Automation of agriculture hasn't made it to vineyards quite yet because of the delicate nature of the task, but that may soon change, with?robots like Wall-Ye leading the charge.

The Preschool Laboratory: Young Children Think Like Scientists

Scientists analyze statistical patterns in data, they do experiments, and they learn from other scientists.

Growing research indicates that young children learn about the world around them in similar ways, writes Alison Gopnick, who studies childhood learning and development at the University of California at Berkeley.??

Unlike scientists, preschool-age children don't understand statistics, they don't design their experiments, and they don't attend conferences. But experiments are showing that children can, for example, unconsciously grasp statistical patterns and use this information to solve problems.

In a podcast released by the journal Science, in which her review article appears, Gopnick describes a simple experiment done in her own lab, using a machine that lights up and plays music when certain objects are placed on it. Experimenters show children as young as 2 that, when placed on the machine, one of the blocks activated the lights and music two out of three times. A second block activated it two out of six times. The children are then asked to make the machine go.

"They have seen the machine go off two times in both cases, but if they are actually calculating the probability of the machine going off, they should prefer the two-out-of-three block to the two-out-of-six block," she said.

And this is what four and 2-year-olds did.

"That's a case where even 2-, 3-, 4-year-olds, who are just able to add and subtract seem to be unconsciously able to calculate these probabilities," Gopnick said. Other experiments have shown children can calculate much more complicated probabilities to draw more complicated conclusions, she added.

Another line of research done by others indicates that play is actually experimentation. [Top 5 Benefits of Play]

"What these experiments show if you give the children one of these causal problems like figuring out how the machine works and then just leave the video recorder running, what you see is when the child[ren] are just spontaneously playing. ? What they do is to do a bunch of experiments that will give them just information they need to figure out how the toy works," Gopnick said.

Young children can also learn about causal relationships by observing the actions of others and their consequences. Teachers and other mentors can also teach tots about cause and effect.

Being shown how to do something has advantages, for both young children and for scientists, as well as disadvantages. Most importantly, being taught something instead of exploring it for oneself discourages exploration that can lead to new conclusions, and research indicates this is the case for young children, Gopnick said.

Gopnick's findings have implications for preschool education, since there is pressure to make the early years more academic with a focus on skills such as reading and math.

"I think what this new research shows is children have amazing cognitive skills when they are 2, 3 and 4," she said. "And they are exercising those cognitive skills in the course of playing, of experimenting, of exploring, and when we make preschool more academic, more structured, more like school, we actually are not encouraging children to do the real deep scientific and cognitive work they are capable of doing."

The research is detailed in the Sept. 28 issue of the journal Science.

Philippine central bank keeps easing options open

MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippine's economy does not need more stimulus for now as domestic demand remained buoyant despite the global slowdown dampening exports, but the central bank can ease policy if needed later this year, its governor said on Wednesday.

Any adjustment to interest rates would depend whether the risk of inflation accelerating or risk of economic growth falling was greater, Governor Amando Tetangco told Reuters.

"Right now the balance of risks is broadly even," Tetangco said in an interview at his office in Manila.

The Philippines has shown resilience amid the global downturn that has slowed growth in China and other emerging market economies in the region.

Having posted one of the highest growth rates in Southeast Asia in the second quarter, there was evidence that the Philippines could sustain growth in the second half of 2012.

The Philippines' GDP expanded an average 6.1 percent in the first six months, and policymakers are optimistic growth will hit the higher end of a 5 to 6 percent target for this year, accelerating from last year's 3.9-percent expansion, despite weakening exports of electronics, the main export earner.

"The policy stimulus currently in place is sufficient to provide support to domestic economic activity amid the ongoing weaknesses globally," Tetangco told Reuters in an interview at his office in Manila.

"I'm not going to rule out possible further easing during the rest of the year, but that will depend on our assessment...of the stance of policy relative to the inflation target, which is our primary mandate, and relative to economic growth," he said.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which next meets on Oct 25 to review policy, has kept its overnight borrowing rate at a record low of 3.75 percent following three cuts totaling 75 basis points this year aimed at shielding the economy against external shocks.

STATE SPENDING

Capacity utilization in the manufacturing sector was above 80 percent, and energy sales, an indicator of economic activity, was on the rise.

Accelerated government spending in the second half, and more efficient spending brought about by budget reforms would help sustain growth, Tetangco said.

"We expect to get more bang from each peso spent," he said.

Data released earlier on Wednesday showed government spending rose 10.4 percent in August from a year earlier, although it was down 22 percent from July.

Economists say there is scope to ease policy further to dampen rapid peso appreciation and curtail speculative inflows.

Having gained 5 percent against U.S. dollar so far this year, the Philippine peso is the second best performing currency among emerging Asian economies, only bettered by the Singapore dollar.

Sound macroeconomic fundamentals and the prospect of being rewarded with an investment grade credit rating in coming months have drawn investors, flush with cash thanks to easier monetary policies adopted in developed economies.

While a strong currency offers protection against the inflationary effects of higher prices of imports, it could also crimp growth as it makes the country's exports more expensive and reduces the buying power of foreign currency remittances from Filipinos working overseas.

Domestic consumption, which accounts for 70 percent of GDP, is driven by remittances, which average $1.7 billion a month.

Tetangco said higher oil and food prices in the world market were upside risks to inflation, but these risks were moderated by the weak global economic outlook.

While policymakers were closely watching asset prices particularly in the property market, a bright spot in the economy driven largely by a growing offshoring and outsourcing industry, there were no signs of asset bubbles yet.

"We continue to believe there is limited evidence of stretched valuations in the real estate market," Tetangco said.

(AP) ? His spot on the ballot now guaranteed, Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin began rebuilding support Wednesday among fellow Republicans who shunned him after a remark about "legitimate rape" while Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill honed an election strategy that will use Akin's own words to portray him as an extremist.

Akin won a pair of high-profile Republican endorsements Wednesday from former presidential candidate Rick Santorum and tea party favorite Sen. Jim DeMint. Perhaps just as importantly, the National Republican Senatorial Committee ? which had pulled millions of dollars of planned advertising after Akin's remark ? said Wednesday that it hopes Akin wins and cracked open the possibility of again getting involved in the Missouri campaign.

While Akin attempts to shore up support among the Republican base, McCaskill is incorporating Akin's rape comments into a strategy courting politically independent voters and more moderate Republicans. In the coming days, for example, she plans to roll out a "Republicans for Claire" initiative featuring individuals such as Kansas City businessman Warren Erdman, who once served as chief of staff to former Republican Sen. Kit Bond.

McCaskill's goal is "to help folks realize that this election is about more than just party identification," said McCaskill spokeswoman Caitlin Legacki. "It's about a clear choice between Claire ? who is a moderate, independent senator for Missouri ? and Todd Akin, who is not just too extreme for Missouri, but in a lot of ways too extreme for his own party."

While McCaskill highlights a middle-of-the-pack ranking on a conservative to liberal scale, Akin is attempting to shift the focus away from his own remarks to McCaskill's ties to President Barack Obama and her support for his stimulus act and federal health care overhaul.

"For Akin, the strategy is to try to bring all the Republicans back home ? to try to remind Republican voters that he's their candidate and the alternative is electing Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, that many of them don't like," said Peverill Squire, a political science professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Akin got off to a good start on that Wednesday, a day after the deadline passed for Missouri candidates to get a court order to withdraw from the Nov. 6 ballot. Santorum and DeMint issued a joint endorsement describing Akin as a "principled conservative" and describing Missouri as an important battleground in Republican efforts to gain the four seats necessary to win control of the Senate from Democrats.

"We support Todd Akin and hope freedom-loving Americans in Missouri and around the country will join us so we can save our country from fiscal collapse," Santorum and DeMint said.

Santorum's Patriot Voices political action committee plans to donate to Akin and has hired staff for an on-the-ground effort in Missouri, said spokeswoman Virginia Davis. The Senate Conservatives Fund, which DeMint helped build, now also is considering coming to Akin's financial aid.

In a fundraising email, Akin said the Santorum and DeMint endorsements "are huge for our campaign and show that real conservative leaders are stepping up."

Akin has apologized repeatedly since a TV interview aired Aug. 19 in which he said women's bodies have a natural defense against pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." He rejected calls from top Republicans ? including presidential candidate Mitt Romney ? to quit. Yet the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Crossroads, a group affiliated with Republican strategist Karl Rove, dropped plans to spend millions of dollars on ads that could have aided Akin.

On Wednesday, NRSC Executive Director Rob Jesmer hinted at the potential to reconsider that decision.

"There is no question that for Missourians who believe we need to stop the reckless Washington spending, rein-in the role of government in people's lives, and finally focus on growing jobs in this country that Todd Akin is a far more preferable candidate than liberal Senator Claire McCaskill," Jesmer said in a statement. "As with every Republican Senate candidate, we hope Todd Akin wins in November and we will continue to monitor this race closely in the days ahead."

Sen. Patty Murray, chairwoman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, described the evolving position of the Republican committee as "absolutely shameful." The Democratic committee already has spent about $1 million on TV ads in Missouri and has reserved $4.3 million of additional advertising between Oct. 9 and Election Day.

As the dropout deadline passed, McCaskill began running an ad in Missouri highlighting Akin's remark about rape as the culmination of comments he made over the past year-and-a-half expressing criticism of Social Security, Medicare, the federal minimum wage and federally financed student loans. But McCaskill's campaign may not pummel TV viewers by repeatedly re-broadcasting Akin's rape remark. Rather, McCaskill plans to use it to help illustrate a broader narrative against Akin.

On Wednesday, for example, Democrats were highlighting Akin's position on earmarks instead of his rape remarks. Missouri Democratic Party Chairman Mike Sanders, a former prosecutor, said he had filed complaints with the Federal Election Commission and the Office of Congressional Ethics alleging Akin had solicited financial support from the Senate Conservatives Fund in exchange for switching his position on earmarks.

Akin has used earmarks in the past, and the Senate Conservatives Fund supports a ban on earmarks, which allot specific amounts of money to specific purposes in a specific state or congressional district. Akin said earlier this week that he supports the earmark ban.

Akin campaign adviser Rick Tyler said the Democratic complaint was "baseless" and "designed to distract voters from Claire McCaskill's liberal voting record."

3-D images of 300-million-year-old insects revealed

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Stunning 3-D images of 300-million-year-old insects have been revealed for the first time by University of Manchester researchers.

Writing in the journal PLOS ONE, the scientists have used a high resolution form of CT scanning to reconstruct two 305-million-year-old juvenile insects. Without the pioneering approach to imaging, these tiny insects -- which are three-dimensional holes in a rock -- would have been impossible to study.

By placing the fossils in a CT scanner, and taking over 3,000 X-rays from different angles, the scientists were able to create 2,000 slices showing the fossil in cross section.

From these slices the researchers created 3D digital reconstructions of the fossils. This process allows them to learn more about the lifestyle, biology and diet of the insects, one of which is similar to a modern day cockroach, and glimpse fascinating insights about how both were adapted for survival.

One of the insects reconstructed by the scientists is characterised by a large number of sharp spines. It is a new species and genus which does not exist today.

The other is an early predecessor of one of the great survivors of the insect world, the cockroach, and is one of the best preserved examples of this age ever seen by insect palaeontologists. Researchers suspect from its well preserved mouthparts that it survived by eating rotting litter from the forest floor.

Both are members of a group called the Polyneoptera -- which includes roaches, mantises, crickets, grasshoppers and earwigs. But analysing the exact relationships of the insects will be difficult for the researchers, led by Dr Russell Garwood of the University of Manchester's School of Materials, as insects have a habit of dramatically changing appearance as they develop.

Dr Garwood said: "The most dramatic change is seen in insects like butterflies, which change from a larva, to chrysalis, to adult. But relatively few people look to the fossils try and work out how such a life cycle may have evolved.

"We are hoping that work like this will allow us to better understand the biology and development of these early insects, and how major innovations may have come about.

"Around this time a number of early 'amphibians' were insectivores -- they lived by eating a lot of insects. The spiney creature was a sitting duck, as it couldn't fly, so the spines probably made it less palatable. It is bizarre -- as far as we're aware, quite unlike any members of the Polyneoptera alive today."

"The roach nymph is much like modern day cockroaches -- although it isn't a 'true' cockroach, as it may well predate the split between true cockroaches and their sister group, the mantises."

"This is very much a first step, and I'll be spending the next few years looking at other fossil insects to build on this work.

Professor Philip Withers, co-author on the paper, added: "I am very excited by our fossil work which is providing unique information in 3D."

Gadhafi captor tortured and killed by ex-leader's supporters

One of the men who pulled former Libyan leader Colonel Moammar Gadhafi from a drainpipe last year has been buried after he was kidnapped by Gadhafi supporters and tortured, later dying of his injuries.

Omran Ben Shaaban's body was flown back to Libya by private jet on Tuesday from France, where he'd been receiving medical attention.

Video posted online showed thousands of mourners at a Misrata sports stadium Tuesday night. The Libyan government said it would give the 22-year-old a funeral fit for a hero. A photo was also posted of Shaaban in wooden casket, his face visible through a glass window.

Shaaban and three friends were attacked and kidnapped by Gadhafi loyalists in July near the southern town of Bani Walid, where many Gadhafi supporters still live. Relatives told the Associated Press Shaaban was shot twice and paralyzed from the waist down. When Libya's president Mohammed el-Megarif managed to get Shaaban and two of his friends released this month, Shaaban was "skin and bones."

"It was clear he was beaten a lot," his brother Abdullah Shaaban told the AP. "His entire chest was sliced with razors. His face had changed. It wasn't my brother that I knew."

Shaaban was then flown to France for treatment, but he died on Tuesday.

The fall of Gadhafi has resulted in the rise of independent militias and widespread lawlessness, highlighted by the deaths two weeks ago American Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans during an attack on the consulate in Benghazi.

The AP reports that Shaaban belonged to a coalition of militias called Libya Shield, sanctioned and supported by the Defense Ministry.

He reportedly never received the $800,000 reward for capturing Gadhafi last October, but his brother said Shaaban considered it his duty.

Gadhafi was found hiding in a drainage pipe near his birthplace Sirte. He was dragged out and violently carried away during which time he was killed. Video posted by the aggregator Storyful appears to show Shaaban carrying a pistol while a bloodied Gadhafi pleads for his life.

Libya's congress has vowed to track down Shaaban's kidnappers. A militia commander said they would take matters into their own hands if the authorities fail.

"We will take revenge militarily but legitimately," Walid Ben Shaaban told Agence France-Presse. "We will give the authorities an opportunity to tackle the issue but if they fail to act, we know how to make our move."

The Nelson Family: Bring on September!

I came out to go to a party, and I found the kids splashing like this.? I think Zack figured puddles = free babysitting while I was getting ready!? They sure had a blast.? It was so muggy my lens kept fogging up, but I got a couple of them in puddle heaven.

We had fun at Jeremi's birthday party!

Trying sushi for the first time...which everyone knows you must do cross-eyed.

"It's a little good, and a little bad."

Little pest pounds more food than her big siblings.

"You gotta problem wit dat?"

Chels was in heaven with her balloon.

She was whipping it around so fast.

And chasing it all over.

I'm so funny!

Nose smash!

That wispy hair is almost too much!

And of course we loved seeing our friends!

The birthday boy.

We had a fun girls night out to celebrate Lili's birthday!

BBQ at the Barbosas' house!

Chels adores Alex.

This pic is awful, but this was so ridiculous I want to remember.? I tried taking the kids to Zack's softball game on a school night.? Bad choice.? Cami started melting down big time, screaming and crying on the ground...and then Carson fell hard at the playground and came running up literally screaming at the top of his lungs and writhing around.? I thought he broke something!? (He didn't.)? I had him twirl his wrist around and realized he was okay, but he would not stop scream-crying like a crazy person.? I high-tailed it out of there laughing at the ridiculousness...Zack felt "bad" for me - but was all too happy to stay and finish his game, haha!? I don't blame him.? Carson screamed non-stop, "I broke a vein!!? I broke a vein!!" and "Take me to the doctor!!"? When we pulled up to our house, another round of crying started, "This isn't the doctor!!!!"? Ohhhh boy.? Tired kids all right.

Zack and Anthony took the big boys to a Card's game - here they are just chatting away!

This was my view driving home from running club one morning.? Running during sunrise is something I've come to just love.? We meet MWF at 5:45am and run 5 miles, and then I stay and run some more cause I'm just a running fool! :)? I've definitely been bitten by the bug.? We're doing a 10k next month - it'll be fun if it isn't too cold!? The last few mornings have been freezing.

Cheering section at Carson's first soccer practice/game of the season.

He got to play goalie.

As we walked back to the car, Carson saw this rock, and said kinda sadly to Cami, "A fifth grade class died here, Cami."? Oh my word, I couldn't stop laughing!? Had to grab a photo with my phone.

Another phone pic - my cuties at our playground.

Carson got off the bus with this drawn-on highlighter mustache.? I laughed at his creativity.? When he saw me laughing, he said, "Everyone on the bus said, 'Your mom is going to be sooo mad!' but I told them, 'No, she's going to laugh.'"? Maybe one of my sweetest mom moments?

Carson obliged and drew one on for Cami (aka Repeat) too.

And Chels was just fabulous as usual!

Some more typical Chels faces.? The raised eyebrows.

The look away.

The slow blink.? She is so funny and does this when she's being shy.

Okay, that was a good start!? Who's ready for some more??
