'Dueling Dinos' found in Montana to be sold in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) ? Two fossilized dinosaur skeletons found on a Montana ranch in 2006 are coming up for sale in New York City.

The nearly complete skeletons are billed as the Montana Dueling Dinosaurs.

They'll be offered as a single lot at Bonhams on Nov. 19. The auction house estimates it could bring $7 million to $9 million.

Bonhams says the dinosaurs ? a plant eater and a meat-eater ? appear to be locked together in mortal combat.

They're being sold by the owners of the ranch where the fossils were found. It's located in the fossil-rich Hell Creek formation, where dinosaurs once roamed.

Each of the specimens is well preserved.

Paleontologists believe one may be a close relative of Tyrannosaurus rex. The other may be a new species similar to a Triceratops.

Sony to impose UK-wide limit on PS4 pre-orders

PS4 pre-orders placed after Monday will not likely be fulfilled on release day, due to intense demand for the next-generation console, Sony has informed retail partners.

Retail sources have confirmed to CVG that PS4 pre-orders must be placed "before next week" in order to guarantee a system on launch date. That effectively gives consumers an August 5 deadline.

Pre-orders can still be placed thereafter, but may not result in a system on the day of release, as demand is expected to significantly outstrip supply. The deadline will be imposed across the UK, and likely Europe, but circumstances may be different across the US and Japan.

However, retail outlets have also been promised additional units for general sale on day one - meaning those who do not pre-order will still have a chance of buying the system on release day.

A spokesperson for Sony has declined to comment.

Prev Next

Analysts have already issued warnings about PS4 and Xbox One release day supplies.

"It is more likely than not that there will be initial shortages," said Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian.

Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox One release date of November 2013. It will go head-to-head with the PS4 release, which is set for a vague 'holiday 2013' launch.

In June, PlayStation America chief Jack Tretton warned that demand would outstrip supply.

""I certainly think, given the technology that we're offering, given the software line-up, given the price point we have, that we'll have consumers interested in excess of what we're able to manufacture."

Microsoft recently claimed that Xbox One pre-orders are "trending higher" than that of Xbox 360 during its respective pre-launch period.

Dollar off lows, shares up on promising earnings, data

By Marc Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - The dollar climbed off a five-week low and shares edged up on Tuesday as a heavy session of European data and earnings showed early promise before this week's trio of big central bank meetings.

Signs that Spain's recession is easing and a pick-up in German consumer confidence set an upbeat tone ahead of euro zone business and consumer sentiment data later, and meetings of the ECB, U.S. Federal Reserve and Bank of England.

It was also one of the busiest days of the European earnings season so far with over 40 of the region's major firms announcing results. <.eu/>

A strong start by French utility EDF and German chip-maker Infineon helped lift the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> share index 0.2 percent as London's FTSE, Frankfurt's DAX and Paris's CAC 40 climbed 0.2-0.3 percent.

MSCI's world index <.miwo00000pus>, which tracks 45 countries, climbed 0.2 percent as European gains filtered through.

In the currency market, the dollar <.dxy> continued to pull away from Monday's five-week low as investors viewed its sharp drop over the last two weeks as a chance to get back in ahead of Tuesday's start of the Federal Reserve's two-day meeting.

"The Dollar Index is rebounding from the 200 moving average, suggesting that a recovery is likely to develop," Morgan Stanley's currency analysts wrote in a note.

"While the market appears to be fully prepared for a more dovish Fed, we expect the dollar to remain data-dependent"

Focus was also on the Australian dollar. It hit a two-week low of $0.9085 after the country's central bank governor said inflation would be no bar to a cut in interest rates and that the currency could fall further.

The euro was flat at $1.3265.

Europe's debt markets also saw a quiet start with Bunds and peripheral bonds all little changed though with the expectation of more action later.

Alongside the heavy slate of data, Italy will sell up to 6.75 billion euros of bonds. The auction is expected to go smoothly although it comes as Silvio Berlusconi faces a Supreme Court ruling that could see him banned from public office, a move that could endanger Italy's shaky coalition government.

In Asian trading, Japan's Nikkei bounced 1.5 percent as the yen eased though stocks elsewhere in the region finished flat as China's central bank's first injection of funds into money markets since February was balanced by some mixed data.

Street Artist Replaces Erased Work With Stencil of Guy Who Erased It

The work of a street artist is perhaps by definition impermanent; you create, it's found out, it's erased, you move on. Or, if you're a young man who goes by the name of DS, you spot the guy who's erasing your work, photograph him, and come back later to immortalize him as a stencil in the exact same place.

Saving Face: Does Your Online Reputation Need Managing? | The ...

From Our Friends

Saving Face: Does Your Online Reputation Need Managing?

Kevin G. had been working in finance for five years when he decided to apply for a new position at an illustrious firm.

?I?d heard that a lot of employers will do some due diligence online before interviewing people, but I didn?t have any type of online presence at the time?no Facebook, no LinkedIn, nothing,? says Kevin. ?But I decided to Google myself, anyway, to see what came up.?

What he found was another Kevin G., whose disturbing information was readily available online. ?The Kevin G. who came up was a child sex offender,? Kevin says. ?He has a different middle initial, and he?s in his sixties, while I?m in my twenties. But I didn?t think that potential employers would even get to those details. Instead, I saw them passing up on my r?sum? once they saw that the whole first page of search results for my name was from mugshots.com and bustedoffenders.com.?

Clearly, Kevin needed to do something?and fast. Luckily, a friend of his told him about a website called?BrandYourself. It?s?one of many online reputation management services that claim to be able to swiftly clean up your digital profile. Depending on how much cyber-scrubbing needs to be done, these services can either be free or cost upwards of $1,000 a month.

But are they worth it?

To find out, we checked in with people just like Kevin who?ve used these popular sites for honest feedback on their digital revamps?as well as asked experts for advice on how you can improve your internet rep without shelling out a lot of cash.

The 411: How Online Reputation Management Works

Since the first big site,?Reputation.com, launched in 2006, the business of online reputation management has grown exponentially.?Reputation.com, which offers a ?Reputation Defender? product that starts at $250 per month, now has 1.6 million customers in over 100 countries alone.

?Indeed, there are hundreds of consultants offering online reputation management services, dozens of firms that specialize in reputation management and a handful of big-name companies that have managed to cement their own reputation as the leaders of the pack,? says Andy Beal, C.E.O. of the social media monitoring siteTrackur and co-author of ?Radically Transparent: Monitoring and Managing Reputations Online.?

People who sign up with sites like BrandYourself and Reputation.com receive different services based on the packages and tools that they choose. For example, do-it-yourself products, which allow you to submit up to three links for search engine optimization and tracking advice, are free through BrandYourself. Meanwhile, the premium option costs $80 per year, and lets you submit an unlimited number of links to be optimized. There?s even a $199 per-month concierge service?you?re basically hiring someone to do the work for you, like removing addresses and phone numbers from the web.

Even businesses use these services to help manage their online presence.??Our review management tools,? says Leslie Hobbs, a director at Reputation.com, ?make it possible for professionals and small and medium businesses to see what?s being posted about them in real time on many review sites and social media outlets, respond directly from the platform, analyze the content for trends?and even proactively ask customers for accurate feedback.?

?We started the company when our co-founder [Pete Kistler] couldn?t get an internship because he was being mistaken for a criminal with the same name,? says Patrick Ambron, C.E.O. and co-founder of BrandYourself. ?Unfortunately, he didn?t know how to fix the problem himself, and traditional reputation companies quoted him at thousands of dollars per month. So we wanted to create tools and services that anybody could use, regardless of their situation.?

In Kevin G.?s case, he needed to build an online presence of his own before he could set himself apart from the sex offender who shared his name. ?My friend recommended that I get on LinkedIn and Facebook,? Kevin says. ?Then I set up an account with BrandYourself for free that walked me through changing a few settings on those pages to ensure that they are visible and searchable [by Google].?When I Google myself now, the information I want people to see is the first stuff I find, and the sex offender has been pushed off the first page.?

Sue Scheff, who runs an advocacy group for at-risk teens, uses Reputation.com to protect herself from cyber-smears created by a disgruntled former client. ?Their services are priceless,? says Scheff, who won a major internet defamation and invasion of privacy?civil case against her online heckler and co-authored ?Google Bomb: The Untold Story of the $11.3M Verdict That Changed the Way We Use the Internet.???I always share with business people and professionals that your digital image is usually the first impression your client will see of you ? and you never get a second chance to make a first impression.?

How to Protect Your Online Rep?the D.I.Y. Way

That said, not everyone supports using an online reputation management service. Many critics argue that the sites don?t provide anything above and beyond what you can easily do yourself to protect your online identity.??All the digital reputation management stuff is out there for free,? says?B.J. Mendelson, author of ?Social Media Is Bullshit.? ?And based on my own experience, it only takes a couple of hours to learn?and way less than that to manage it each week.?

Ivana Taylor, publisher of?DIY Marketers, says that it?s totally possible to safeguard your online reputation on your own. ?These days, employees are like small businesses,? she says. ?In a lot of ways, you are a brand, and like any other brand or product, you need to manage yourself.? Here are Taylor?s top tips for?shoring up your own online rep:

1. Set up Google alerts for your name

Head over to the?Google alert page, and in less than 10 minutes, you can establish a name alert. This way, you?ll always be aware when something is being said about you online?positive or negative.

2. Complete those social media profiles

This is something that many employees and business owners fail to do, Taylor notes. ?If you don?t exist on LinkedIn and Twitter, or worse, your profiles are incomplete, it leaves the barn door open to trash your reputation,? she says. ?After all, if someone says something bad about you, and people search social media and see nothing or something incomplete about you, then whatever that person has written will carry more value.?

If you have a complete social media profile, it will also make it easier for employers to bring you in for an interview. ?Think of it from their perspective,? Taylor says. ?They are looking at hundreds of r?sum?s. They search social media and don?t find anything for you, but they do find something for someone else. Who do you think they will call??

3. Create a flood of positive content

Think of Google as?your home page, Taylor advises. ?When someone searches for your name or your company name, what they see on Google will form an impression of you,? she says. ?So if you constantly create content that?s credible and valuable and reputable, then a single negative post or comment will simply get lost.?

4. Present yourself as you?d prefer to be perceived

People form impressions about you and your business by the way you appear online. ?Using a party picture on LinkedIn doesn?t make a good impression, so take the time to have some professional-looking photos taken,? Taylor suggests. ?This is a small investment up front, but it will pay off in the long term.?

Whether you use an online service or not, one thing is clear: Maintaining a squeaky-clean online presence should be high on your to-do list.

?Your digital identity?what?s revealed about you in simple search results?can impact your career, your finances and your personal and professional relationships,? says Tory Johnson, author of ?Spark & Hustle: Launch and Grow Your Small Business Now.? ?Fairly or unfairly, we often believe what we read online, which means we?re all responsible for proactively managing our online persona.?

Dozens injured in Swiss train wreck

GRANGES-PRES-MARNAND, Switzerland (Reuters) - Two trains collided head-on in Switzerland on Monday evening, injuring about 35 people, five seriously, police said.

The driver of one of the trains was still unaccounted for and thought to be inside the wreckage, at Granges-pr?s-Marnand in the canton of Vaud, police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel said.

"These are regional trains. The speeds are a little lower and even if one deeply regrets the likely loss of life of one person as well as five serious injuries, the situation could have been much more catastrophic," Sauterel said.

He said it was too early to try to ascertain the cause of the crash.

One of the injured was taken by helicopter to Lausanne. Others were treated on the spot by paramedics or taken to hospital by ambulance.

About 40 people were on the two trains, one of which was heading to Lausanne, the other was going to Payerne.

Seventy-nine people were killed in a train crash in Spain last week, one of the worst in decades.

Football: Barefoot academy offers hope for football-mad Vietnam

PLEIKU: Deep in the Vietnamese highlands, an academy teaching youths to play football with no boots or goalkeeper offers a glimmer of hope for a national team plagued by scandal and poor performances.

Hand-picked players train for nearly five hours a day in modern facilities at the elite school, which is backed by English Premier League giant Arsenal.

Recruited at around 10 or 11 years old, the players follow the "philosophy" of the JMG sports academies, set up by former French international player Jean-Marc Guillou.

"They start off barefoot -- no shoes, no goalkeeper," said coach Guillaume Graechen, who finds it amusing that other teams are "shocked" by their ways.

The trainees are allowed to lace up their football boots only after they have mastered juggling the ball, which usually takes about five months. The full training lasts seven years.

The method seems to be working for the two intakes of trainees that the HAGL-Arsenal JMG Academy in the town of Pleiku recruited in 2007 and 2009.

"They are on the same level with professionals in Vietnam, even Europe or overseas," said Graechen, who personally selected all 27 students.

"Technically, tactically and intelligently, they are ready to be professional," he told AFP on the sidelines of the playing field, adding the students had got more confident since playing in a competition in Europe last year.

The resort-like academy, which boosts manicured green pitches, a swimming pool, and immaculate villas for the trainees to live in, was set up and funded by Vietnamese conglomerate Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL), which also owns an eponymous team in the V-League.

It has a partnership with Arsenal, which sends a manager to monitor student development once a year.

The academy "is working very well so far (and) many young players are developing," visiting Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger said last week.

Arsenal recently became the first English Premier League side to play in Vietnam, and local fans -- some of whom had queued overnight for tickets -- packed the 40,000-seat My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi.

Vietnam lost 7-1 to the Gunners but the closely-watched match was a high point for the national team, which -- like the domestic V-League -- is usually shunned by fans who prefer to watch and bet on European matches.

From heroes to villains

Vietnamese football went professional in 2000. Prior to that, footballers were -- like many in the communist country -- officially state employees.

"In the late 1980s, players truly played football with devotion," long-time football fan Tran Huy Tuong, from Ho Chi Minh City, told AFP.

National team players "were considered heroes of Vietnamese soccer who could pack stadiums with fans," he said nostalgically.

Almost immediately after the V-League was set up, it became mired in controversy as allegations of corruption and match-fixing surfaced.

Dozens of players, referees and officials have been jailed or sanctioned due to their involvement in match-fixing scams.

"I stopped watching Vietnamese football about 10 years ago. I don't even care when the national team plays," 55-year-old Tuong said.

"They ruined my love for them because of continuous scandals," he said, adding he has switched to watching international matches instead.

Fans also started staying away from V-League fixtures as violence increased -- with hooligans throwing bottles, burning flares, and scrapping after matches now commonplace at some clubs.

Attendance has fallen sharply in the last few years and clubs are losing money which causes problems for wealthy club owners, many of whom have withdrawn their investments, also partly due to a general economic slowdown in Vietnam.

The national team also put in a dismal performance at the most recent Southeast Asian Games and has plunged to 145th in the FIFA World Rankings.

Sphere of influence

But in Vietnam, the love of the beautiful game dies hard. Football is, by all measures, the most popular sport in this country of some 90 million.

On many Hanoi street corners, young boys -- often barefoot -- can be seen kicking cheap plastic balls around on the pavement after school classes, but sports facilities are lacking.

This is why the HAGL academy could prove so crucial to the development of domestic football.

"The fact we've trained them, for seven years, to play together, think together, it will affect Vietnamese football," Graechen said.

"If the core of the best players continue to progress together, they will not need to talk each to other.. they will just have to glance at each other to understand," said Graechen.

HAGL, one of Vietnam's largest conglomerates, has recently attracted negative media attention after being identified in a Global Witness report as a driver of land disputes in neighbouring Cambodia and Laos due to its extensive rubber plantations there.

A petition has been launched asking Arsenal to end its cooperation with HAGL -- also one of the main sponsors of the Gunners' recent Hanoi match -- as it "brings shame on our club".

HAGL "are using Arsenal to bring a veneer of respectability to their disgusting behaviour," the petition says.

Many of HAGL's academy students hope to eventually play for a top-end European club while others are likely to join V-League teams.

Ksor Uc, 17, from a poor Jarai ethnic minority family, hopes to one day play for Manchester United.

"I also dream of being able to put on the national team shirt and bring glory to Vietnam," he said.

Sleep your way slim? It may not be that simple, but these 8 steps for ...

We know that eating less and moving more are key components of successful weight loss, but many of us don't realize just how much our sleep patterns can directly impact our waistlines as well.

Researchers have found that we eat more when we're sleep deprived ? as much as 549 extra calories a day. That's probably because skimping on sleep increases levels of a hunger hormone called grehlin that can increase our appetite and cravings for carb-rich foods.

Even when we do cut back on calories, sleep deprivation may still inhibit our ability to lose weight. One study tracked participants who cut their calorie intake by 680 calories a day; one group slept 8.5 hours a night, while the other group was restricted to just 5.5 hours a night. After two weeks, the sleep-deprived group had lost 55 percent less body fat and 60 percent more lean body mass.

Another recent study found that people who sleep less are more likely to consume high-calorie foods, get more of their calories from refined carbs, and eat fewer vegetables and fruits.

To make matters worse, the physiological symptoms of fatigue and hunger can feel the same. So if we're tired and sleep deprived, it can be easy to reach for a calorie-rich meal or snack in hopes of an energy boost, when we really just need more Z's.

And weight isn't the only thing that's negatively affected by poor sleep habits. Chronic sleep deprivation is also linked to an increased incidence of depression, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

So clearly sufficient sleep is not a luxury ? it's a necessity.

Problem is, we're a sleep-deprived nation. More than one-quarter of Americans report not getting enough sleep, according to the latest stats by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The reasons are many: Worry, stress, never-ending workloads, smartphones that allow us to stay connected 24/7. Turning to prescription meds and sleeping pills might even aggravate the problem: Ambien, by the way, is linked to semi-conscious night-eating, often with no recollection of it the following day, which only serves to worsen any weight-related woes.

Instead, start by taking a closer look at why you're short on sleep, and take the necessary steps to modify your behaviors and sleeping habits.

Try incorporating these eight strategies for a better night's sleep.

Set a schedule. Aim to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day, trying to stay consistent even on weekends. This is one of the biggest challenges for me, sleep-wise; I've found that setting an alarm for 9 p.m. each evening helps, by serving as a reminder to start winding down and get ready for bed.

Time your workouts right. Regular exercise (150 minutes a week) has been shown to improve sleep quality by 65 percent, but if it's too close to bedtime, it may interfere with sleep. Sleep experts typically recommend exercising at least three hours before bedtime to allow enough time for your body temperature to come down (cooler body temperatures are linked with falling asleep).

Unplug. Minimize screen time, particularly in the hours before bedtime. The artificial light can interfere with our body's production of melatonin, a hormone (secreted especially in response to darkness) that helps to regulate our sleep patterns.

Reconsider that nightcap.?? One drink with dinner is probably fine for most, but keep in mind that while alcohol may help you fall asleep, it can interfere with the quality of sleep that your body is getting.

Ease up on caffeine. Limit your intake to not more than 300 milligrams daily, the equivalent of about three cups of regular brewed coffee, and try not to consume caffeine after 2 p.m.

Avoid large meals before bedtime.

But don't go to bed hungry. Going to bed with a growling stomach/hunger pangs can make it hard to fall asleep as well. To reap maximum benefits of tryptophan, an amino acid that can help induce sleepiness, the best nighttime snack is one that contains a blend of carbs and protein: Peanut butter spread onto whole grain toast, a carton of plain lowfat Greek yogurt topped with a bit of fiber-rich cereal, or a few whole grain crackers with thinly-sliced cheese.

Supplement wisely. Anecdotally, many of my clients have found that taking multivitamins close to bedtime can make it harder to fall asleep, possibly because of the B vitamins that most contain. Taking 500 mg of magnesium at bedtime may help with falling asleep and staying asleep.

Other supplements that may be effective in improving sleep quality and sleep patterns include melatonin (0.3 to 5 mg once daily at bedtime), or a combination of lemon balm extract (80 mg) and valerian root extract (160 mg) three times daily. As always, check with your physician or pharmacist before beginning any new supplement regime.

Sprint reports 'highest-ever' revenue of $7.2 billion for Q2 2013, loses $1.6 billion on Nextel shutdown

Sprint reports 'highestever' revenue of $72 billion for Q2 2013

Sprint has just announced its second quarter 2013 financial results, and while it's pay as you go plans are paying off in terms of income, shutdowns and charges caused a huge loss. The company posted $7.2 billion in earnings, its "highest ever" total and an eight percent increase over last year, but also took a net loss of $1.6 billion for the quarter. It's chalking that up to a huge depreciation charge of $430 million and another non-cash hit of $623 million due to the Nextel platform shutdown, which is finally complete. However, the company added that over 4 million Nextel subscribers were "recaptured" to the Sprint platform since the transition commenced in early 2011. The shutdown and loss were anticipated, though and apart from that, Sprint said it's in good place, having achieved "record levels of... postpaid subscribers, service revenue and postpaid ARPU." It also completed its acquisition of Clearwire (at last) and US Cellular's spectrum and customers, while itself being captured into Japanese carrier Softbank's orbit. (For its part, Softbank managed a whopping 238 billion yen ($2.4 billion) in net income during the quarter.)

The operator now has 4G-LTE coverage in 151 markets, including 41 that are new as of today, including Philadelphia, the Bronx , Brooklyn, Jacksonville, Nashville and Oakland. As for subscribers, post post-paid customers are up from last year, but pre-paid clients are down due to "planned deactivations related to regulatory changes." All of that resulted in an increase in churn (turnover) year-over-year to 1.83 percent. Eighty-six percent of its postpaid handset sales were smartphones, including about 1.4 million iPhones sold during the quarter. Going forward, the company just launched a raft of new data plans, including an Unlimited offering that guarantees customers who sign up will get to keep it for life. We'll have to wait and see whether that and all the other machinations this quarter will finally push the company into the black.

Artfully using stained glass to capture solar energy

A collection of eye-catching stained glass installations by a Toronto artist is generating solar power in three provinces, and one of them is in the process of being hooked up to the Saskatchewan grid.

"Lux Gloria" by Sarah Hall, at the Cathedral of the Holy Family in Saskatoon, is currently being connected to Saskatoon Light & Power's electrical distribution network, confirmed Jim Nakoneshny, facilities manager at the cathedral.

The artwork, which consists of solar panels embedded in brightly coloured, hand-painted art glass, had just been reinstalled and upgraded after breaking and falling into the church last year.

Once it is connected, the cathedral will be able to use the solar power produced by the art installation to offset its own power consumption from the regular grid, Nakoneshny added.

'When you use art, you build a story into it that makes people notice in a way that they don't if it's just technology.'?Sarah Hall, artist

According to Kevin Hudson, manager of metering and sustainable electricity for Saskatoon Light & Power, the solar panels are expected to produce about 2,500 kilowatt hours annually or about a third to a quarter of the 8,000 to 10,000 kilowatt hours consumed by a typical home in Saskatoon each year.

Nakoneshny expects all of this solar power to be used by the cathedral itself, although he said it's possible, if unlikely, that there will be times when the church system feeds power back into the grid. But that's not the point.

"This is, first and foremost, an art glass installation," Nakoneshny said. "The solar component is included to showcase many of the energy saving design elements throughout the building and show that a technical system doesn't need to be ugly."

Toronto artist Sarah Hall created her first stained glass-solar voltaic windows for a McGill University project displayed at the 2005 Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C.Toronto artist Sarah Hall created her first stained glass-solar voltaic windows for a McGill University project displayed at the 2005 Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. (Courtesy Sarah Hall)

In fact, the installation will become Saskatchewan's first building-integrated photovoltaic system (BIPV), where solar panels are embedded directly into walls, windows or other parts of a building's main structure. It's a trend that is expected to grow in the future as the traditional practice of mounting solar panels on rooftops isn't practical for many city buildings, including some churches.

Hudson said that, as far as he knows, "Lux Gloria" contains the first cathedral windows in the world to integrate solar energy collection into their stained glass.

Hall suggested it's a good way to raise awareness about green energy.

"When you use art, you build a story into it that makes people notice it in a way that they don't if it's just technology," the artist said in a phone interview.

"Lux Gloria" is one of four solar-stained glass window installations across Canada, along with two in the U.S., that Hall has created since 2005, and the first to be hooked up to the grid.

Colleagues uninterested in using solar cells

Hall had been working in Germany about a decade ago when an engineer named Christof Erban visited a studio she shared with several other artists to demonstrate a technique he had developed for placing solar cells between two layers of glass.

Erban asked if any of the artists would be interested in incorporating solar cells into their work.

"Everyone else in the room said, 'No thanks ? too complicated,'" Hall recalled. "However, I was immediately interested."

Hall, Erban and a glass studio in Germany worked together for about two years to refine the technique for use with art glass.

Hall first demonstrated the technique in stained glass windows installed in McGill University's "O Canada" solar house at the Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. in 2005. The project was funded by Natural Resources Canada and the Chalmers Foundation.

Her other large installations include:

  • "Leaves of Light" at York University in Toronto.
  • "True North/Lux Nova" at Regent College, University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
  • "Waterglass" at the Enwave Theatre, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto.
  • "The Science of Light" at Grass Valley Elementary School in Camas, Wash.

Each one incorporates solar cells of different colours ? for example, silver in the cathedral in Saskatoon, blue at Regent College and gold at Grass Valley Elementary School ? intended to match with the accompanying artwork and the fa?ade of the building.

All those colours are commercially available, but need to be adapted for the artwork.

In the case of the Cathedral of the Holy Family, each solar panel was a different size and was trapezoidal in shape, Hall said. As a result, "all the solar work had to be hand soldered."

Because the solar cells aren't transparent, Hall adds a high-tech "dichroic" glass to the back of the cells in some cases to make them colourful and reflective.

New solar technologies for windows that would allow them to be transparent and generate solar energy, such as spray-on photovoltaic coatings, are currently under development for use in building-integrated photovoltaics.

Hall said she is very interested in those more advanced technologies for her future projects.

"It certainly is exciting and we're certainly watching to see how it goes."

NBA Hall of Famer West believes in Panthers Newton

By STEVE REED
AP Sports Writer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - NBA legend Jerry West jokes that while Cam Newton may not have what it takes to play power forward in the NBA, the Panthers quarterback certainly has the makeup to lead Carolina to a Super Bowl title.

West says Newton has "a lot of obstacles ahead of him but I think he's the guy to do it."

West, who won six NBA championships as general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers and now serves an adviser for the Golden State Warriors, visited training camp Monday as a guest of Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.

Richardson and West first met in the 1980s.

West says he's eager to see Richardson win his first championship, saying he's "worked his fanny off to bring the best players and the coaches here."

Judge to consider evidence against Penn State officials

By Dave Warner, Reuters

The former football coach whose account of Jerry Sandusky molesting a boy in a Penn State shower is at the heart of a cover-up case against former school officials testified at their court hearing on Monday.?

Mike McQueary told of a series of talks he had with late Penn State coach Joe Paterno in February 2001, including the morning after he spotted Sandusky sexually abusing a child in the locker room showers.?

"I had seen Jerry Sandusky engaged in a very bad sexual act, a molestation act, with a minor," McQueary testified he told Paterno. He also testified that he told other university officials about the incident - including two of the three officials appearing at Monday's hearing. None reported it to police.?

Sandusky, 69, a former assistant football coach, was convicted in June 2012 of 45 counts of sexual abuse involving 10 boys. He is serving a sentence of 30 years to 60 years in a state prison.?

McQueary lost his job as a receivers coach after charges were filed against Sandusky in November 2011. His testimony opened a preliminary hearing in the criminal case against the college's former president, Graham Spanier, 65; its former athletic director, Tim Curley, 59; and its former senior vice president Gary Schultz, 63.?

The three university officials are accused of a "conspiracy of silence" for failing to report the shower incident to authorities, which permitted Sandusky to continue preying on boys, most of whom he met through a charity he founded for at-risk youth.?

McQueary, who testified he also told Curley and Schultz of the shower incident, said Paterno told him in the months following the shower incident "Old Main screwed up," using a nickname for the administrative center of Penn State.?

Sandusky was arrested in November 2011 and charged with molesting boys. A year later, in November 2012, a grand jury charged Spanier, Curley and Schultz with endangering the welfare of children, criminal conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Spanier also was charged with perjury.?

Curley and Schultz were previously charged in November 2011 with perjury and failure to report suspected abuse.?

Spanier was fired from Penn State; Curley was placed on administrative leave and Schultz had already retired from the school.?

Harrisburg District Judge William Wenner will decide if there is enough evidence to bring the case to trial after the preliminary hearing.?

Within weeks of Sandusky's arrest, Penn State Trustees fired Spanier, at the time the nation's highest-paid public university president. Trustees also fired Paterno, Sandusky's boss. Months later, Paterno, a legendary figure in college football died of lung cancer at the age of 85.?

Civil lawsuits filed by the victims, now grown men, against the university are close to being settled, with the school putting aside $60 million to cover the claims, according to a lawyer for one of the plaintiffs. The attorney said there were as many as 32 claims from alleged victims.?

McQueary also has filed a whistleblower and defamation lawsuit against Penn State, accusing the school of not renewing his contract because he cooperated with authorities investigating Sandusky and the Penn State officials.?

And, Spanier's lawyers have served legal notice that they intend to file defamation charges against Louis Freeh, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Freeh was the author of a study, commissioned by the university, spelling out a narrative of the scandal that many in the state rejected, including the Paterno family.?

The Freeh report prompted the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the governing body for college sports, to issue sanctions against Penn State. The NCAA imposed a $60 million fine and voided the 14 seasons of football victories Sandusky coached.?

3 dead when bus carrying teens crashes in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A bus carrying teens coming home from a church camp crashed Saturday after exiting an interstate in Indianapolis, killing three people and sending 26 others to hospitals, officials said.

Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said the dead included a man and a woman. He did not have information about the third victim.

Witnesses said the bus came speeding off of Interstate 465 on Saturday afternoon, struck a retaining wall as it tried to round a curve and overturned. WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed.

Duane Lloyd told the TV station that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash.

"I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus," Lloyd said. "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

Karen Woodard, a member of the Colonia Hills Baptist Church, cried as she stared at the wrecked bus surrounded by pillows, water bottles and clothing. She said the bus was returning from a youth camp in Michigan and that some of the teens had their parents with them.

"It's so terrible. I can't believe it," she said.

Indianapolis Fire Department said crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Four good Samaritans helped before first responders could arrive, including one man who helped pull the driver out, the agency said.

The bus was carrying 40 passengers who are members of Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Indianapolis and were returning from a summer camp. The Fire Department said those injured included children and adults.

Indianapolis Fire Department spokesman Capt. Rita Burris said survivors were taken to area hospitals. Some of the victims were taken by helicopter.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities were urging people to use caution in the area. A hazardous materials crew was cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled in the crash.

Outside the church about a mile away, families gathered to hug and talk quietly as parents paced back and forth talking on cellphones. A yellow school bus with the church school's name was parked outside with piles of sleeping bags and suitcases nearby.

Thai navy deployed to fight oil pipeline leak in the Gulf of Thailand

By Agence France-Presse
Sunday, July 28, 2013 10:52 EDT

?

Thai naval vessels joined efforts Sunday to stop hundreds of barrels of oil from a pipeline leak in the Gulf of Thailand reaching the kingdom?s beaches.

Roughly 50,000 litres of crude oil spilled into the sea on Saturday about 20 kilometers (12 miles) off the coast of the eastern province of Rayong, operator PTT Global Chemical said.

The company, part of state-owned giant PTT, said 10 ships were involved in an urgent clean-up and it was confident of containing the leak.

?The aerial photos taken early morning Sunday show that the area of the spill was reduced,? the company said in a statement, estimating that up to about 20,000 litres had been cleaned up.

At the same time there were fears about the effect of the chemicals used to disperse the crude oil.

?We still have some concern about the chemical being used, even though it is clear that the oil leak will not reach the beaches or coral,? said Phuchong Saritsadeechaikol, director of the government?s Marine and Coastal Resource Conservation Center in Rayong.

Another PTT subsidiary was involved in a huge oil spill off northwestern Australia in 2009 that was the country?s worst ever offshore drilling accident.

The slick from the Montara oil field spread as far as Indonesian waters and environmentalists said it grew to almost 90,000 square kilometres (35,000 square miles).

An Australian government inquiry blamed widespread and systematic shortcomings at the oil company for the spill.

How to be an iOS ninja: Top 5 secret shortcuts for Siri, Mail, Safari, Calendar, keyboard, and more!

How to be an iOS ninja: Top 5 secret shortcuts for Siri, Mail, Safari, Calendar, keyboard, and more!

See a button. Tap a button. That's easy. Does just what it says on the tin. But when it comes to long-presses, more complex gestures, and other advanced multitouch controls, they can be hard to discover, challenging to remember, and otherwise a pain in the apps. But man alive, can they make using your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad faster! And once you get the hang of their multi-touch magic, not only won't you stop using them, you won't be able to wait to wow your friends and family!

1. How to quickly enter caps, numbers, punctuation, and more with the iPhone and iPad keyboard
