As vegetarianism becomes more commonplace, most grocery stores carry a slew of meatless options. Two Florida firefighters arrived in Maine to try to find their missing friend and colleague, Jerry Perdomo, who vanished 10 days ago after driving the 1,600 miles from Florida to visit a friend.
Jerry Perdomo, 31, husband and father of two, rented a car and made the trek from central Florida to visit a friend in Bangor, Maine. He hasn?t been seen since Feb. 16.
?We?re going to go out there and walk and pound the pavement. The fire department has offered to do anything that we need to, to make sure this a productive effort,? said Lt. Dave Williams, vice president of the Seminole County Professional Firefighters in Florida.
?He?s a family man, he always talks and brags about his family, his kids and his wife,? Williams said. ?He?s always got that glimmer in his eye when he talks about them. So for something like this where he comes up here and just not to be heard from is totally uncharacteristic of him.?
The firefighters are canvassing the woods in the area where Perdomo disappeared, looking for clues. They join Perdomo?s sister and father, who came up to Maine from New York.
?My dad cried really hard last night when it was snowing because he was just praying he was someplace warm and safe,? said Skye Ramos, Perdomo?s sister.
WESH-TV interviewed a woman who was identified as Lisa, who said she was the friend Perdomo was visiting. The woman said Perdomo stepped out the evening he disappeared to visit a friend and said he would return shortly to take her to dinner.
He never did.
The next day, the married father?s rental car was found abandoned in a Walmart parking lot with no signs of foul play.
Police tracked down and questioned Daniel Porter, 24, and Cheyanne Nowak, 23, at Porter?s mother?s house in Connecticut on Friday. The Maine couple may have had some form of contact with Perdomo prior to his disappearance, police said.
The couple had left their car, bought a used one and left Maine, leaving their families perplexed.
?I can?t find my nephew. I?m worried about him,? said Brian Porter, Daniel Porter?s uncle.
Nowak?s mother Deb Nowak defended her daughter in an interview with ABC News affiliate WFTV.
?She?s a full-time honor student and works part-time at the mall, why would she risk everything she?s worked for and be involved in something like this?? Deb Nowak.
She said that police considered Porter as the person of interest, not her daughter.
?I don?t know much about him,? Nowak said, but added that Porter is very quiet and came from a good family.
?I can?t say much else, this is all speculation,? Nowak said.? ?He hasn?t been proven guilty or innocent of anything.?
Nowak told WFTV that her daughter has a misdemeanor drug arrest five years ago, but said she does not know if drugs are involved in this case.? She also denied her daughter had any involvement with Perdormo?s disappearance.
Deb Nowak also said in an interview that the couple was staying with Porter?s mother in Connecticut.? She said she?s never heard of Perdormo but that she didn?t think he was a friend of Porter?s because ?he doesn?t have many friends and is usually very tight knit.?
After Perdomo was reported missing, Porter and Cheyanne Nowak reportedly bought a used car and abandoned the one they were driving, telling an employee at the car lot that they had to leave town because of an emergency.
Cheyanne Nowak posted a cryptic message on her Facebook page: ?I?m sorry for your loss. I?m sorry your friend is missing. It is a terrible thing. I am so sorry about this. But I can do nothing further. Night.?
But Perdomo?s fellow firefighters aren?t giving up.
?We?re hopeful that we?re just going to run into him. The brothers are here to give him a ride home,
said Kip O?Brien, a firefighter at the Bangor Fire Department.

Fabulously directed and infused with great magic, Hugo certainly files under above-average fantasy fare. I can't say I fully concur with the overwhelming critical acclaim, but it's a pleasant journey to take with an amazingly rich visual pizazz. Martin Scorsese may be a stranger to this family-friendly genre, but he's certainly no weaker for it, as he plays his new instrument like he's never done anything else. Apart from the endearing leads played by Asa Butterfield and Chlo? Grace Moretz, I also took a great liking to the wonderful supporting cast. Sacha Baron Cohen is a little more downplayed than usual (no green mankinis this time around), but quite memorable nevertheless as the tenacious station inspector Gustav. As can be said for Sir Ben Kingsley, who brings a lot of passion to his character, as the old toy-maker Georges M?li?s. Not to mention the brief, but excellent performances by Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Emily Mortimer and Jude Law. Sadly, not everything runs like clockwork though. While the film is enjoyable all the way, the progression of the plot sometimes drags and loses momentum, which is one of the reasons why I can't allow myself to give it a higher rating than I have. It also feels a tad outstretched and would have done good in leaving out some of the less essential scenes. Another thing I wasn't too excited about is the blue & orange color palettes. It's become a common trend in Hollywood these days to apply these sort of "mood-setting" touches, but personally I think it just serves to diminish the visual impact. An enchanting and painstakingly crafted piece of film-making nevertheless though, that if anything shows that Scorsese haven't lost any of his flairs for heartfelt story-telling. MILFORD, Mich. (AP) ? One day after a feisty debate, Mitt Romney criticized Republican rival Rick Santorum and courted tea party voters Thursday in a pair of primary states separated by nearly 2,000 miles.
"I appreciate the work you're doing. I appreciate your willingness to get out of your homes," he told an audience of tea party members in suburban Detroit, an appearance designed to let him reach out to a part of the electorate that tends to favor his campaign rivals over him.
Romney drew applause when he attacked President Barack Obama as uninformed about the workings of the American economy and called him "a man comfortable living with trillion-dollar deficits."
But he largely sidestepped when asked how he could be able to counter Obama in a debate in the fall campaign if the president brought up similarities between the health care law Romney signed as governor of Massachusetts and the health care overhaul passed by Congress that Republican contenders have vowed to repeal.
That was an evident reference to a requirement for individuals to purchase coverage ? at the heart of both laws ? but Romney's answer omitted that topic. Instead, he said, "The first thing I'd say to him is, 'You say you copied (the Massachusetts law), how come you didn't give me a call? I'd have told you what worked what did not work.'"
He added that the federal law was too expensive, raised taxes and cut $500 billion from Medicare over a decade.
Romney threw a glancing blow at Santorum, recalling that the former Pennsylvania senator had said in a debate in Mesa, Ariz., on Wednesday night that he had voted for President George W. Bush's No Child Left Behind education law even though he didn't like it.
"He said, 'You know, you've got to take it for the team now and then.' Well, my team is the people of the United States of America."
That was Romney's message earlier in the day in Arizona, as he sought to upend Santorum's image as a principled defender of conservative ideals Thursday by describing him as just another give-and-take politician.
Michigan and Arizona both hold primaries on Feb. 28. Romney is heavily favored to win Arizona and claim all 29 delegates at stake, but Santorum is making an unexpectedly strong bid for an upset in the second contest, where 30 delegates are on the line.
Aides to Romney say Santorum opened himself to the attacks with a somewhat anguished explanation of his reluctant vote for the Bush-era school program in Wednesday's televised debate. Romney hoped to stop his chief rival's momentum on a day when Santorum was quietly raising money.
But Obama wasn't helping. His allies aired anti-Romney ads in Michigan while the president campaigned in Florida, a crucial swing state that GOP candidates can't afford to re-visit until their nominee is settled.
A Romney setback in either Michigan's primary or Arizona's on Tuesday would be embarrassing, or worse. His campaign seemed grateful for Santorum's unsteady showing in what may have been the GOP campaign's last big debate.
"It was against the principles I believed in," Santorum said of the Bush education law during the debate. "But, you know, when you're part of the team, sometimes you take one for the team."
Santorum also struggled in the debate to explain his congressional votes for earmarked spending and for a bill that included money for Planned Parenthood despite his "personal moral objection" to the organization, which provides abortions for low-income women.
"I don't know that I've ever seen a politician explain in so many ways why he voted against his principles," Romney said Thursday at an Associated Builders and Contractors meeting in Phoenix.
The issue could prove troubling for Santorum, who lacks the money to match Romney's TV ads. Santorum's chief strengths include his image as a courageous social conservative willing to confront voters about the moral implications of birth control, abortion, divorce and other issues.
At a tea party rally in Tucson shortly before the debate, Santorum said he was "unafraid to go out and fight on all the issues we care about." He referred to Romney as "a well-oiled weather vane" that shifts with political winds.
Romney's focus on Santorum reinforced the notion that the GOP race is mostly a two-man contest heading toward the 10-state "Super Tuesday" primary on March 6. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, trying to stay within striking distance, campaigned Thursday in Washington state and Idaho. Rep. Ron Paul, like Santorum, had no public events Thursday.
Given Arizona's significant Mormon population, a Romney loss there on Tuesday would be stunning. Nearly as crucial is Michigan, where Romney was born and his father was a three-term governor and top auto executive.
All four of the GOP candidates opposed the government's bailout of the auto industry, a big issue in Michigan and one that divides Republican voters. Obama calls it a smashing success. Romney has drawn the most fire on the topic, thanks to his Michigan ties and a 2008 newspaper article he wrote that was headlined, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt."
He says Chrysler and General Motors should have gone through a privately funded "managed bankruptcy," but independent analysts say only the federal government had the money at the time to keep the companies afloat.
A pro-Obama group Thursday released a TV ad in Michigan in which the narrator says, "When a million jobs were on the line, every Republican candidate turned their back." The ad shows Romney's face and his 2008 op-ed article.
In Miami on Thursday, Obama accused the Republicans of pushing a flawed and dishonest strategy for reducing gas prices, predicting they would offer nothing but more drilling and political promises of $2-a-gallon gas. "The American people aren't stupid," Obama said.
Santorum didn't back away from his "take one for the team" comment after the debate. Asked by a reporter if he would change his words if he had the chance, Santorum responded: "Not at all. Politics is a team sport."
Romney plans to campaign in Michigan every day until Tuesday, with a side trip Saturday to Florida for the Daytona 500 car race. "We're going to win Michigan," said his strategist Stuart Stevens.
Santorum is trying to avoid being swamped by Romney's TV spending in Michigan. Romney's campaign and a friendly "Super Pac" bought $2 million of air time in Michigan for the primary's final week, while Santorum and his allies bought about $1.4 million. An anti-abortion group helped Santorum with $150,000 in Michigan radio ads.
Gingrich is not competing in Michigan. He was planning an unusual 30-minute commercial on energy policy in states including Washington.
Santorum was buying ad time on cable channels in Ohio, Oklahoma and Tennessee, which are among the Super Tuesday states. The pro-Romney pac has bought $590,490 of air time in Ohio.
Santorum planned to campaign Friday and Saturday in the Detroit area.

PHOENIX (AP) ? A government informant whom defense attorneys have dubbed a "trailer park Mata Hari" didn't use sex to obtain evidence against two white supremacist brothers accused of bombing a city official in Arizona, a federal prosecutor said Tuesday.
Prosecutor Michael Morrissey told jurors that the hiring of the informant, identified in court records as Rebecca Williams, was "entirely permissible and necessary" to the investigation of identical twin brothers Dennis and Daniel Mahon.
The 61-year-old brothers are accused of sending a package bomb to Don Logan almost eight years ago to the day, on Feb. 26, 2004. Logan, 54, is black and was the diversity director for the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale at the time.
Logan was hospitalized for three days after the bombing and needed four surgeries on his hand and arm. The bombing also injured a secretary.
The trial, which began Jan. 10, has been filled with drama as Williams took the stand for several days, and Logan himself described the bombing in detail for the jury.
Investigators chose the woman, who is a civilian, for her good looks and had her dress in revealing clothes and send the brothers racy photos to get them to open up to her. The "trailer park Mata Hari" nickname is a reference to the Dutch exotic dancer convicted of working as a spy for Germany during World War I.
Closing arguments began Tuesday morning, with Morrissey telling jurors that the evidence shows the Mahons were believers in "racial terrorism and violence as a way to accomplish their goals."
Morrissey replayed tapes that showed Dennis Mahon telling Williams how to make pipe bombs. In one recording, he tells her that he's had pipe bombs work in the past and that he's taught some white police officers how to make the explosives.
During the trial, jurors also heard recordings of the Mahons using racial epithets for black and Hispanic people and saying violence is the only answer for white men.
The brothers have pleaded not guilty to one count each of conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosive, malicious damage of building by means of explosive, and distribution of information related to explosives.
Since the Mahons were arrested in June 2009 at their home in Davis Junction, Ill., their attorneys have unsuccessfully tried to get some or all of the charges against them dropped for various reasons, including allegations that the informant and federal investigators engaged in "outrageous conduct" that amounted to entrapment and coercion.
Defense attorneys also have argued that a more likely suspect in the bombing would be someone who worked in the city of Scottsdale and knew about its intraoffice mail, since the package was found in the city library and routed to Logan ? not sent in the mail.
The Mahons were living in the Phoenix area at the time of the bombing but left days afterward.
Prosecutors argued during the trial that the brothers belonged to a group called the White Aryan Resistance, an organization that encourages members to act as "lone wolves" and commit violence against non-whites and the government to get their message across.
They played for jurors hundreds of hours of video and audio surveillance of the brothers interacting with Williams.
In January 2005, Williams set up a government-provided trailer at a campground in Catoosa, Okla., where the brothers were staying after the bombing. Authorities put a Confederate flag in the window and had Williams act like a government separatist and a racist to get the brothers to trust her.
Over the years, the three mostly spoke over the phone, but they got together in person on several occasions. While apart, the informant sent the brothers several revealing photos of herself, including one of her from behind wearing chaps, a Confederate bikini bottom and a black leather jacket. Another photo showed her in a white bikini top with a grenade hanging between her breasts as she posed in front of a pickup truck and a swastika.
By all accounts the tactic worked.

THURSDAY, Feb. 16 (HealthDay News) ? Marital harmony may be in short supply in households where one partner is immersed in online games such as World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings and Guild Wars, new research suggests.
When one spouse spends time in this online fantasyland, it can threaten marital satisfaction, said researcher Neil Lundberg, an assistant professor of recreation management at Brigham Young University.
In this study, published in the Feb. 15 issue of the Journal of Leisure Research, Lundberg and his team polled 349 couples. Of those, 132 were marriages in which one person played online games; the other 217 were marriages in which both played but one played more than the other.
In those marriages where just one partner played, the investigators found 70 percent of the gamers and 75 percent of their spouses said the activity had a slightly negative to a very negative effect on the marriage.
?This study clearly verifies that video gaming can be a significant impediment to happy marriages,? Lundberg said.
However, there was a surprise finding: those who played together generally liked it, with 76 percent saying it had a positive effect on their marriage.
The games are always ?on? and play in real time, Lundberg said. ?It?s very engaging in terms of its environment. It has the potential to really capture people?s time use.?
Some find the chance to ?become? a dragon slayer or other medieval hero irresistible, he noted.
The fallout from too much video gaming included quarreling, which was more common when one partner gamed and the other didn?t.
The couples were about age 33 and married about seven years, the study authors noted.
The gamers put in 17 to 22 hours a week, often in addition to work and family responsibilities.
?It?s like a part-time job,? Lundberg said.
The friction occurs, Lundberg said, because the gaming interferes with communication and connection time. Couples in which one partner gamed reported, for instance, that they went to bed at different times.
The amount of conflict stirred up, rather than just the amount of time spent playing, made the impact on marital satisfaction, he noted.
In recruiting people for the study, Lundberg said he went to gaming sites and social media sites. He received negative reaction, he said, from extreme gaming sites. He said they may have been loathe to take a few minutes away from their gaming to answer the researchers? questions.
The finding about gaming ?widows? doesn?t surprise Eve Kilmer, a Denver psychologist who specializes in couples counseling.
A partner who reaches out to communicate but is often ignored because the spouse is engrossed in gaming is eventually going to become dissatisfied, she said.
?In someone prone to addiction, there may be underlying intimacy issues anyway,? she added.
For a spouse who feels like a gaming ?widow? or ?widower,? Kilmer suggests addressing the issue in a positive way.
?If you are going to bring it up with your spouse, you don?t want to be critical,? she said. Instead of telling a partner what you wish he wouldn?t do, tell him how you feel when he does it, she suggested.
Telling your partner, for instance, that too much gaming makes you feel unimportant and unloved ?is more likely to evoke understanding and empathy,? Kilmer said.
