Setting priorities is one of the most important parts of preparing for home renovations. For instance, what must be done should be placed on top of the list.

An example of prioritizing would be doing your roof first (because you have a leak) and then doing something to make your house look better cosmetically. Nonessential repairs like installing a new countertop should be done well after all of the priority-based repairs or renovations are accomplished. By taking care of these renovations in this order, problems are easy to avoid. And if you can?t figure out what you need to do first, hire a professional to come in to give you their opinion of what renovations or remodeling should be done. In conclusion, home improvement projects can make your home more appealing, more comfortable and more valuable. Remember to take care of business up front and you will have taken care of aspects that may have gotten in your way on down the road with your project. You now know some effective ways to keep negative issues at bay; take care of business initially and you should have fewer problems.

Cross-cultural dating. Yikes. ? AFKC Special Correspondent

?Wait, what? He?s my boyfriend?? I said, more than a little shocked.

?Well, yeeeeah,? said K.

The moment when I realized I had a boyfriend and didn?t even know it was probably when I fully understood the complications of cross-cultural dating.

So, as a little Valentine?s Day entry, I thought I?d share what I see as the big differences between relationships ? la fran?ais and ? l?am?ricain. Not that I am in any way an expert (I mean, honestly, dating in your own culture is hard enough.)

In the USA, I think we put a lot of effort in defining the relationship. I have always gone by the rule that you are not allowed to call someone your boyfriend (or girlfriend) until you talk about it. As relationships evolve organically and not mathematically AND we are not all good communicators in this world, a lot of Americans end up defining their relationship as ?um, it?s complicated.?

In France, there isn?t really the same stress about definitions. Relationships move fluidly. One of my friends told me that the only time you bother to stop and define what you are is if you are conciously cultivating something with no romantic attachment. Otherwise, after you?ve seen someone a few times (or in some cases, after a really good first date), they become your ?copain? or your ?copine.?? Nine years later, if you are still dating that same person, they are still your ?copain? or ?copine.?

In the US, we tend to make a distinction. People in my sister?s age group start with ?talking? with someone (basically consistent flirting and playing with the idea of a relationship.) Then, you ?date? or ?see? someone in a more serious-than-talking-but-still-casual way. Only when it becomes serious does that person becomes your ?boyfriend? or ?girlfriend.?

So you can imagine how shocked I was to learn I had a boyfriend. My American friends were right there with me.

?I think I need to break up with him,? I confided in a friend over Skype.

?Wait, what?? she said. ?Break up? When did you start dating??

Good question.

In the end, I can see advantages in both systems. I like it that the French definition is so liberal: in that way, you don?t have to display how serious or casual your relationship is to everyone who asks. It is more natural, fluid and relaxed, which is good because no relationship is the same. You can?t fit it into a certain box and it is unfair to label something in a way that has preconceived notions attached.

That said, being a girl who was raised in the Midwest, I think I kind of need that definition that I grew up with.

If for no other reason, to know what to write to friends back home.

Teachers fly experiments on NASA reduced gravity flights

ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2012) ? More than 70 teachers had an opportunity to experience what it feels like to float in space as they participated in the Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston last week.

The teachers flew aboard an aircraft that flies parabolic flight paths, which create brief periods of weightlessness. It is a key component of NASA's astronaut training protocol. The teachers were selected for the flights through NASA's Teaching from Space and Explorer School Programs.

NASA Associate Administrator for Education and two-time space shuttle astronaut Leland Melvin also participated in some of the flights and shared first-hand with the participants his experiences in astronaut training.

"The enthusiasm among our teachers participating in the reduced gravity flights is contagious," Melvin said. "I know it will add a new dimension to their teaching as they engage their students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics studies."

Also participating in the flights was Mark Riccobono, executive director of the National Federation of the Blind's Jernigan Institute. Riccobono is blind. NASA has worked with the National Federation of the Blind in a variety of capacities during the past 10 years to share the excitement and inspiration of the agency's missions and programs with those who are visually impaired.

"NASA education always is looking for ways to make our offerings available to the widest audience possible," Melvin said. "Mark Riccobono's flight represents a new chapter in our commitment to sharing the excitement of NASA's mission with the blind community."

The Teaching from Space Program offers educational opportunities that use the unique assets of NASA's human spaceflight mission to engage the education community and create space-related learning opportunities. Teachers used the event to work with their students to propose, design and build the experiments they took on the flights.

Fourteen teams comprising 40 teachers from NASA Explorer Schools also participated as part of the 2011 School Recognition Award for their contributions to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. They conducted microgravity experiments provided by NASA.

The Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program continues NASA's investment in U.S. education by helping attract and retain students in STEM disciplines critical to future space exploration.

US sweeps Federer's Swiss team out of Davis Cup (AP)

FRIBOURG, Switzerland ? The United States swept favored Switzerland out of the Davis Cup on Saturday when Mardy Fish and Mike Bryan beat Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Teaming for only the second time, Fish and Bryan comfortably handled the 2008 Olympic doubles champions in front of an occasionally hostile Swiss crowd of 7,000.

"This is probably going down as one of the most memorable (wins)," said Bryan, who played on the 2007 winning team.

The doubles victory gave the Americans a 3-0 lead in the best-of-five, first-round series. They advanced to the quarterfinals in April when they again will be on the road ? against France or Canada.

The U.S. was kept under control for a set and a half, then seized every opportunity to exploit errors on Wawrinka's serve. The crowd got angry when Bryan hit Federer and Wawrinka with volleys at close range later in the match.

"They did really well and got the victory they deserved," Federer said. "We did have our chances but maybe they were just a touch better than us again today."

Swiss captain Severin Luethi dismissed suggestions his team underestimated the Americans' ability to adapt to a clay court, although one that played faster than expected at Fribourg's altitude of about 2,000 feet.

Fish and Bryan picked up the momentum from Friday's thrilling singles matches when John Isner stunned Federer in four sets and Fish outlasted Wawrinka in five.

"Our attitude remained strong all the while and we were ready for whatever," U.S. captain Jim Courier said. "That is what you need for any road tie."

In the seven other first-round series in the World Group, three other nations completed 3-0 sweeps Saturday: Czech Republic (vs. Italy), Spain (vs. Kazakhstan) and Argentina (vs. Germany). Ahead 2-1 are Japan (vs. Croatia), Serbia (vs. Sweden) and Austria (vs. Russia). Canada and France are 1-1.

Bryan is a doubles specialist who usually plays with his twin brother. Bob Bryan, however, was unavailable because of the birth of his daughter last week. The only other time Fish and Mike Bryan played together was a five-set victory over Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco in a 2008 semifinal in Madrid that Spain won 4-1.

Courier initially chose 19-year-old Ryan Harrison to play with Bryan at Thursday's draw. But Davis Cup rules allow lineup changes up to one hour before a match.

"It's great that the guy I have to tee it up with is the best doubles player ever," said Fish, who won Friday in 4 hours, 26 minutes. "I'm just trying to do my part."

Mike Bryan extended his exceptional record in Davis Cup doubles to 20-2, and is unbeaten in 11 away matches.

In a match of few break-point chances, the Swiss had an opportunity on Fish's serve in the opening game when Wawrinka struck a winner. Federer served for the set, but the first chance was lost when Bryan's forehand looped off the net cord for a winner.

That stroke of luck brought boos from some fans ? a sign of tension in the sold-out arena after Friday's surprising home defeats. Wawrinka's angled volley winner created a second chance and Fish's backhand went long.

The U.S. broke through in the sixth game of the second set when Wawrinka twice double-faulted and Fish hit a rare crosscourt winner from the baseline.

"We just had a couple of games where we struggled too much and couldn't convert ourselves," said Federer, who has lost three straight matches dating to his Australian Open semifinals defeat to Rafael Nadal two weeks ago.

The Americans seized on Wawrinka errors in the third set. The Swiss player hit back-to-back wayward volleys to drop serve.

Bryan angered the home fans in the next game when he made Federer yelp with pain with a forehand volley that struck his leg.

On Federer's serve, the U.S. held two set points and Bryan's volley down the middle split the Swiss pair. Bryan's double-fist pump celebration drew more whistles from Swiss fans.

Bryan became the villain again when he struck Wawrinka in the midriff with a volley in the opening game of the fourth set. Bryan's rapid apologies each time failed to quell the fans' frustration.

"I wasn't trying to hit anybody. It happens in doubles," Bryan said. "The fans were looking to get into the match and I've seen it a hundred times in Davis Cup."

Bryan repeated his victory dance when breaking Wawrinka to lead 3-1 in the fourth, firing a forehand winner into the open court after Federer volleyed back another net cord that favored the Americans.

The match ended on another Wawrinka error, his service return sailing long.
