Lookout for Android

Lookout Mobile Security has been hard at work this year. Since we first reviewed their Editors' Choice-winning app Lookout Premium for Android (free, or $2.99/month for Premium), back in February, Lookout has improved the depth of its security scans so that you're notified of malware in sideloaded apps, or apps you download outside the official Google Play store, as well.

Lookout Premium for Android offers powerful, triple-threat protection for your Android device, all under an extremely intuitive, simple interface and lightweight package. Lookout blocks mobile malware, protects your data from device theft or loss, and warns when apps seek too many app permissions.

Traditional security companies with their own mobile products, such as?Norton Mobile Security,?Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android,?F-Secure Mobile Security, and?McAfee Mobile Security 2.0, have quickly caught up feature-wise. However, Lookout has a better grasp of its user, and it shows in this simple, fuss-free app.

Free or Premium?
There are two versions of Lookout for Android. The free, ad-supported version includes malware scans, a Find My Phone feature that geo-locates your missing phone on a Google map, and cloud-based backup contacts. Lookout Premium adds four more features: Safe Browsing to block phishing and malicious websites located in text messages or when browsing, remote wipe and lock, a privacy advisor for your apps, and additional backup for photos and call history, which you can restore on a new device. It removes the pop-up ads, though they never bothered me much anyway. I highly recommend at least getting the free version. ?

I tested Lookout Premium on an app-laden?Samsung Galaxy Nexus?with Android 4.0.2 and a factory reset?Samsung Galaxy S II with Android 2.3.5. If you're an iOS user, check out?Lookout for iPhone.?

Getting Started
Getting started with Lookout takes minimal effort. After downloading the app, create an account with a valid email address and password, and you're good to go. By default, Lookout sends eekly emails about the status of your smartphone?s security. You'll also use this address to log into Lookout's Web-based admin portal, Mylookout.com.??

From there, Lookout performs a full scan of your device and SD card for malware and spyware; 95 percent of you will pass this bill of health, given that the incidence of Android malware is still?very low?in the real world.?Still, if you're in five percent, you'll be glad you checked. By default, scans are performed every day and any time you're about to download an app or file (checked as File System Monitoring in your Settings). You can reschedule daily or weekly scans for a specific day and time of the week, or stick to on-demand scans only. I set mine to run daily at 4 AM for minimal interference with my normal use. On a Nexus with 137 apps installed, the scan took about two minutes, and didn't slow down my usage of other apps appreciably.

Anti-virus That Doesn't Hog Resources

Security applications aren't the popular kids in school. We expect them to interfere with our device's processing speeds and battery life, making it one of the first to go when it comes to cleaning out our app library. You won't feel that need with Lookout, which is extremely lightweight.

On a cold boot up?I powered off the phone and timed how long it took to reboot, averaging three tests?the Nexus took 54.5 seconds to restart with Lookout and 51.7 seconds without. The GS2 took 37.9 seconds to load with Lookout and 36.2 seconds to load without. Impressive. Lookout also claims that running its app for one day only consumes as much juice as a 30-second phone call.?

After setup, Lookout only turns on when your device connects to a server. You'll notice pop up alerts fade in and out with updates; it tells you that the file you've just downloaded is malware/spyware-free, or that Safe Browsing has been enabled when you launch a new browser for the first time. Because you don't have to tap to close an alert, I found the alerts reassuring rather than excessive and annoying.

Webcasts push solar eclipse to the masses

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? It was one of the best places in the western United States to watch the annular solar eclipse, and people drove for days just to get to this dusty stretch west of Albuquerque.

Did it matter?

Some say no. The game of chasing celestial spectacles like Sunday's eclipse has changed thanks to live webcasting by observatories around the world and social network sites that are being fueled by grainy smartphone photographs and video clips.

The National Park Service streamed the eclipse live on its website from Petroglyph National Monument, a remote expanse of prairie and long dormant basalt volcanoes that was situated directly in the path of the eclipse.

It was a first for the agency, proving that sharing such an event with the world from such a location was technically possible.

"This was a big step for us," Jeff Olson, an agency spokesman who was on his way back to Washington, D.C., on Monday after watching the event at the monument.

Across town, the University of New Mexico did the same thing. In Japan, Panasonic went live from Mount Fuji.

Millions of people across a narrow strip of eastern Asia and the Western U.S. turned their sights skyward for the annular eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges.

The rare lunar-solar alignment was visible in Asia early Monday before it moved across the Pacific ? and the international dateline ? where it was seen in parts of the western United States late Sunday afternoon.

"I always tell people it's like going to a sporting event. It's always better to be at the game but watching it on TV is not so bad," said Patrick Taolucci of Slooh SpaceCamera, which can tap into observatory feeds around the world and stream them online while experts discuss what's happening.

With the location and equipment barrier removed, UNM astronomy professor Richard Rand said this new way of experiencing eclipses and other celestial events can only add to their understanding and result in more interest in science.

Rand received an email from a mother Monday who said she and her daughter were able to watch the university's streaming of the eclipse on their smartphone while driving to a viewing site in New Mexico.

Emails have also been pouring into the National Park Service. More than 17,000 people logged on Sunday, including people who missed out on seeing the ring due to clouds in Colorado and a person who was wheelchair bound and unable to get to any of the viewing parties.

But for some, especially the globe-trotting eclipse groupies, there was nothing like being in Albuquerque.

Alan Macklem made the three-day trip from Manitoba, Canada, with his wife.

"I've started," he said. "It's going to turn into a compulsion and then into a habit and then I won't be able to break it. I'll have to see every eclipse from now on."

So what's the fascination?

Watchers agree there's simply nothing like it and it doesn't really matter whether people are behind a pair of solar glasses or watching it on a smartphone.

"I think it's something that really goes to the inner soul, the guts, the real inside of who we are as human beings," Olson said. "We're drawn to the sun. We're drawn to the stars at night."

Bananaphone touch synthesizer replaces ring ring rings with chiptunes (video)

Image

If you're tired of bananaphones that just make calls, the crew at Gadget Gangster now has a homebrew project to use them for musical escapades. A custom-coded (and appropriately named) Adafruit Propeller board turns a bunch of bananas into the Bananaphone TouchSynth, a synthesizer using the same capacitive touch principles that let a MaKey MaKey turn anything into a controller. The project as it's built won't be rocking stadium-sized crowds anytime soon -- not with those beeps and that lone speaker -- but there's nothing stopping it from scaling up to bigger sounds. Just remember that your fresh beats will turn very brown within a few days.

Commercial Real Estate Heading for a Deep Freeze | EconMatters

By Anthony Harrington via?QFinance

One of the clich?s of real estate investing is that you can make more of everything but you can't make more land. The implication is that real estate has to be a one way bet. More people competing for a share of an asset that can't be expanded very readily must equate to constantly rising prices, or so the law of supply and demand might seem to suggest.

The constantly increasing cost of office and residential property in the world's top cities provided an obvious case in point through the 20th century and for much of the first decade of the 21st Century. Before the 2008-2009 global financial crash, investments in commercial and residential property regularly generated year on year total returns of over 15 percent. When both rental income and capital growth were combined, the returns in the more spectacular years could be north of 20%. No wonder real estate caught the attention of investors.

However, what this clich? about the nature of land does not take into account, is that the real estate sector is particularly prone to developing asset price bubbles which go unnoticed in their formative stages. Before the catastrophe of the United States sub-prime mortgage debacle, the loosening of lending criteria for home ownership in the US was justified again and again on the grounds that there had never been a collapse in house prices in the US. Before the crash of the Tokyo stock market property values in Japan had soared to unprecedented heights, with one bedroom flats selling for in excess of the Yen equivalent of a million dollars.

China today is desperately trying to craft a soft landing for its economy despite a massive bubble in the Chinese property market. The Spanish economy is floundering largely because its major and minor banks all have massive amounts of underperforming property loans on their books. The Irish Government's efforts at bailing out its banks, which blew up after a decade of disastrous lending on property, left Ireland needing billions in EU bailout funding, and its citizens are now facing a bleak future.

The lesson to be drawn from this is that investing in property is very far from being a safe, one way bet. Property has its attractions and its disadvantages as an asset class. The enduring disadvantage is that by its nature, property is an illiquid asset class with extremely lumpy exits. When you invest in a building you are clearly not thinking of selling it next week, and probably not in the next five to ten years. Property funds do churn their assets, but by comparison with active equity managers, they move in a geological time frame. The long term nature of property investment is well suited to pension funds, which are quite happy to tie money up for a twenty to thirty year time horizon.

However, as well as having attractions for institutional investors property has a place in the balanced portfolio of individual investors, particularly where the person concerned is still several years away from retirement. Then too, the fact that commercial property generates a more or less dependable stream of rental income means that it also comes into consideration as a way of building or sustaining income through retirement. Nevertheless, while property might look to a naive investor to be the Holy Grail of investment, able to deliver both income and capital growth, it remains an extremely complex asset class and one that needs to be handled with care, particularly at the present time.

A uniquely difficult set of conditions that are going to persist

The "proceed with care" warning that should accompany any property investment applies through all stages of the economic cycle. However, it is especially true today. Healthy commercial and retail property markets require two things, namely a ready supply of debt financing and a robust economic environment. Neither of these conditions pertains at present in any major Western economy. In its survey of global property trends for 2012, the accountancy firm PwC warns that we are moving into an era for property that is probably going to be a decade or so in duration and that this period "will be characterised by more negatives than positives in its early years.[1]"

Among the biggest negatives has to be the fact that as far as lending on property is concerned, there is now a credit crunch that is getting to be as bad as that which followed the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.

There are two main reasons for this.

The first has to do with the European sovereign debt crisis which had reintroduced fears about counter party risk, since the major European and US banks tend to be highly exposed to the threat of "haircuts" if some of the peripheral countries go down the Greek route and renegotiate their debt. The US banks are not holding that much dodgy European sovereign debt, but they have written themselves into any potential disaster scenario by providing European banks with insurance on their sovereign risks, in the form of Credit Default Swaps.

The second reason for the growing credit crunch is that in order to meet the banking regulations laid out in Basel III, banks have to increase their Tier 1 capital ratios by around 9% by June 2012.

Banks can do this in one or both of two ways. They can go to the market and raise additional equity finance, or they can reduce their loan portfolios, since the amount of capital they need is proportionate to the amount of risk on their books. Property lending carries a substantial capital reserve requirement so it makes eminent sense for banks to pull out of commercial property lending, or to make dramatic cuts in the amount that they are prepared to lend.

This is extremely bad news for the property markets since it is the equivalent of putting a "deep freeze" on the market. Buyers can't find the funds to buy. Developers can't fund speculative office and warehouse developments. Sellers don't put property on the market because the prices they need can't be achieved, and just about everything grinds to a halt. We are not there yet, it has to be said. There is still a substantial volume of buying and selling going on in core metropolitan markets such as London, Paris and New York. There are "hot spots" such as some Asian emerging markets and Central European markets such as Poland. But the medium term outlook for the sector is far from benign.
