This Week in JPEGs: Surf's Down, Bedtime for Baseball, and Yadi Molina is Injured

Visual metaphors, schmisual schmetaphors.

Welcome once again to This Week in JPEGs, a w-a-a-a-acky and wild look at the week that was. Last week's JPEG o' the Week was titled D-Rob's Juggling Catch, Bronson Celebrates. It earned 54% of your votes, due presumably to my anatomically precise renderings of the female shape. Gah gah gah gooo!!

This past week was a rough one for the Reds and their fans. Seven games in Southern California against the Dodgers and Padres produced only two wins sandwiched around a five-game losing streak. Wah wah wah nooo!!

So here goes your week in JPEGs:

Surf's Down

As was mentioned above, a five-game losing streak in SoCal totally harshed our tubular radical, dude. The Dodgers are red-hot and building a lead in the NL West, but dropping three of four is still not a desirable outcome. The Padres are on something of a roll themselves, but again, 2-5 out left ain't cool at all. Wipe out, brah.

Bedtime for Baseball

We're sticking with the losing streak theme here, because losing streaks are such an abundant source of angst and looking. The big reason the Reds lost five straight was the complete absence of the offense. In those five games, the Reds mustered only six measly runs. In baseball, runs are like pancakes: you need at least three or four, preferably more, to really be satisfied.

Todd Frazier, Brandon Phillips, and Zack Cozart basically sleep-walked through SoCal. Here they are, nestled snuggly in their beds, all tuckered out and dozing like little angels. ALSO!! Late-ass games in California are late. This one also doubles as a bunch of Reds fans missing most of the game because it was so dang-ass late.

Yadi Molina is Injured

Fortunately for everyone in the universe, Yadier Molina will not play in this weekend's crucial series between the Reds and Cardinals. The Reds are 3? games behind the Cards for second place and these are still two of the best teams in baseball, so this is probably going to be a good one. Yadi hurt himself though, so he's on the DL.

Temperature alters population dynamics of common plant pests

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Temperature-driven changes alter outbreak patterns of tea tortrix -- an insect pest -- and may shed light on how temperature influences whether insects emerge as cohesive cohorts or continuously, according to an international team of researchers. These findings have implications for both pest control and how climate change may alter infestations.

Chesapeake Energy reports lower Q2 profit

Jake Dean

Chesapeake Energy has raised its guidance for full-year 2013 oil production.

Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) reported Thursday a second quarter profit of $457 million, or 66 cents per share, a sharp drop from the same quarter a year ago.

The natural gas and oil producer reported a profit of $929 million, or $1.29 per share, in the second quarter of 2012. Last year's second quarter was bolstered by the sale of its gas gathering and processing business, Reuters said.

Chesapeake, which runs its Barnett Shale operation from a headquarters in Fort Worth, said that it was raising its guidance for full-year oil production by 1 million barrels because of good well performance.

Salt Meter Tells You If Your Dinner Is Going To Slowly Kill You

By now we all know that too much salt is bad for you. Excess salt intake leads to high blood pressure, which leads to all kinds of terrible things. But salt is in pretty much every processed food out there, and even the most ardent label reader can't divine how much sodium chloride is in the soup at the town diner. Besides, how much is "too much"? The folks at Thanko have brought some hard numbers to this ambiguous world with their new Handy Salt Meter.

Talia Castellano's Father, Marc Winthrop, Is Fulfilling Her Wish To Find Cure For Pediatric Cancer: What Is Band Of Parents? [VIDEO]

Her positive spirit and encouraging attitude left an impact on not just her family, but on the rest of the world. YouTube makeup guru. Talia Castellano, 13, didn't let her cancer stop her from pursuing her dreams and inspiring others.

"Having cancer has been an amazing yet horrible journey," she said. "Yet every journey has an end."

Talia passed away on July 16, at 11:22 a.m, after battling neuroblastoma.

Now her father, Marc Winthrop, has found volunteer organization Band of Parents, which helps to fund research for new therapies for neuroblastoma. "At that moment, our founding members realized they could make a difference and a short time later, about 100 families of children in treatment for neuroblastoma came together to form The Band of Parents," says the organization's website.

Winthrop says that one of his own pet projects will be getting world-class care for all children, regardless of their parents' insurance statuses or income.

Neuroblastoma?is a childhood cancer that develops from immature nerve cells. The cancer cells mutate and multiply out of control. The initial genetic mutation that causes neuroblastoma is still unclear at the moment.

Winthrop has used his tragedy and turned it into a positive motive to help find a cure for neuroblastoma. He wants for children everywhere to be able to get the best care, regardless of their income status or regardless of insurance.

He also plans to advocate for more research in order to understand and treat this deadly disease; he believe that the only way to do this is with more funds. "The biggest thing I've done is pulled together parent groups and made very significant grants to Memorial Sloane-Kettering for Neuroblastoma," he told the?Daily News.

"Talia left her handprionts and footprings on the world," said her sister Mattia in a YouTube video after Talia had passed away.
