GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP)?
The manager of the Greensboro Coliseum Complex is proposing tearing down the War Memorial Auditorium and starting over from scratch, Mayor Robbie Perkins said.
Matt Brown has spoken with city councilmembers about a $35 million proposal to tear down the existing auditorium and rebuild it, Perkins said.
The new auditorium would hold about 3,600 people, Perkins said. That's 50 percent more than the current 2,400-seat facility built in 1959.
"We're losing events to Durham and their new facility. We can't compete, and we're either going to do something about it or we just need to shut it down," Perkins said.
Hotel tax money would pay for the project, Perkins said. Voters turned down a bond in 2009 that would have paid for renovations.
Brown is out of town this week and could not be reached for comment Monday.
