The "Veronica Mars" movie is really happening. Thanks to a record-setting fund-raising campaign on Kickstarter (reaching its $2 million goal in under 12 hours and likely to quadruple that total before the drive ends April 12), the cult favorite -- which was canceled after three seasons -- is returning to the big screen.
We used to be friends, a long time ago, with the sassy detective, her doting dad and the gang, but it's been six years since the show bid farewell in May 2007.
When creator Rob Thomas first pitched the movie years ago, he writes on Kickstarter, it "revolved around graduation day at Hearst college -- Wallace and Mac were graduating at least, Veronica had been sidetracked by freeing Keith from prison. Plus, there was a murder in Neptune that was affecting the beach city's spring break business in much the same way a great white shark affected the beach community of Amity."
But in the new iteration, "Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune," wrote Thomas. "In the years since spoiling Keith's chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn't taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling. My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica's 10-year high school reunion."
"Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make," said the optimistic producer.? "A two million dollar fundraising total probably means cross words are exchanged at the class reunion. Three million? We can afford a full-on brawl."
With $3 million already in the bank, the brawl is a done deal -- and Thomas promises Logan Echolls will survive to return in the movie's sequel. But what else do we hope to see?
Francis Capra as Weevil in "Veronica Mars."
First of all, Weevil. I'll say it again, WEEVIL! After everything he suffered, the former gangster deserves some success. Maybe entrepreneurial millionaire? And because every successful corporation (and mystery) needs a computer genius, Mac runs his IT Department. She's able to balance her thriving career with motherhood, because her husband is an easygoing stay-at-home dad named -- wait for it -- Dick Casablancas!

Joss Whedon as Douglas on "Veronica Mars"
Is it too much of a stretch for Keith Mars to head Weevil's security team? Or is he back in the gumshoe game, working alongside Vinnie Van Lowe?
Wallace, naturally is an NBA star, and devotes the off-season to his philanthropic organizations -- but once in a while he'll go clubbing with Piz, Neptune's hottest DJ.
Will Duncan Kane return from Down Under to steal Veronica's heart away from Logan? Or could she rekindle a romance with Deputy Leo now that's he's -- duh -- sheriff?
Obviously, when Veronica returns to town she will need to rent a car. You're hired, Joss Whedon!
