Championship

As Southampton and West Ham stutter into 2012, it's left to Middlesbrough to move into the second automatic promotion spot. But it could have been so much better: Tommy Rowe's leveller with three minutes remaining denied Boro moving joint-top on goal difference in a 1-1 draw, after Scott McDonald had opened the scoring. Cardiff are close behind in fourth, Kenny Miller's header at Nottingham Forest securing a 1-0 win, while Reading's rise and rise continues apace after a 1-0 defeat of Ipswich lifted them to fifth.

Elsewhere, the pressure was upped on Leeds boss Simon Grayson after Barnsley completed the double on their Yorkshire rivals, Ricardo Vaz Te's hat-trick sending them on their way to a thumping 4-1 win at Oakwell. "Every one of the players has to look themselves in the mirror tonight and be embarrassed by what they've done today and make sure they do something about it on Monday," said Grayson afterwards.

Coventry clambered off the bottom thanks to goals either side of the interval from Garry McSheffrey and Lukas Jutkiewicz. Replacing them are Doncaster, defeated 4-1 at Watford.

League One

With Charlton playing at Leyton Orient in the late game (the Addicks reduced to 10 men after just five minutes at the time of writing, keeper Ben Hamer dismissed), it was left to the Sheffield sides to keep up the chase close behind. United cruised to a comfortable 3-1 win over Hartlepool at Bramall Lane, while Wednesday were 2-0 winners at Preston. "That performance was much more professional, much more savvy," said Owls boss Gary Megson.

Game of the day, though, came at Griffin Park as Brentford scored three in the final 25 minutes to come from 3-0 down against fourth-placed MK Dons At the bottom, Chesterfield were denied three vital points by Jimmy Ryan's 92nd-minute equaliser for Scunthorpe in a 2-2 draw.

League Two

After Friday night wins for the top two - Crawley and Cheltenham - Southend kept up the pace in third, ending a three-game winless run by beating AFC Wimbledon 4-1 at the Cherry Red Records Fans' Stadium; an added bonus being that only one of the teams below them down to 14th were able to win. Among those slipping up were Shrewsbury, upset 3-1 by an impressive Bradford City performance.

The day's big winners, in scoreline terms at least, were Crewe, who strolled past Bristol Rovers 5-2 at the Memorial Ground, handing Paul Buckle and his team a seventh defeat in 10. Rovers are now just five points above the relegation zone, which is tightening up tantalisingly: two points separate Dagenham & Redbridge in 20th and last-placed Northampton, who fell below Plymouth and will see out the year in 92nd place after conceding an injury-time winner to Swindon.
