You've undoubtedly seen packets of silica gel in your shoe boxes, gadget boxes, and other products, and you probably know that you're not supposed to eat it. Weblog The Kitchn notes, however, that it is safe to put in food containers. and it can do a great job of keeping things fresh.
Despite the warning, in fact, silica gel isn't actually that unsafe to eat (though we wouldn't recommend it). The Kitchn (and its readers) note that it's safe and effective for keeping food fresh, like:
- Spice drawers
- Dried fruits or herbs
- Brown sugar (and other things that tend to clump up)
- Potatos, onions, and other veggies that sprout quickly
Plus, you can use them to extend the life of your razors, tools, and other kitchen items that tend to rust. And when they stop being effective, you can just throw them in the oven on low heat for an hour to dry them back out. Hit the link to read more.
