Seven Habits of Success Real Estate AgentsOne of the reasons that I made the decision to leave behind a very lucrative corporate career, besides being very tired of airports and hotel rooms, was that I wanted the opportunity to put on my entrepreneur hat full time.? The last company that I worked for was an up and coming dot com business and though I was fortunate to be part of the "go public" success I still wanted something that I could build on my own.? But did I have the skills and ability to be successful?? A question that should cross the mind of any one considering a real estate career.

Make no doubt about it.? When you consider getting your real estate license you are starting a business.?? A fact left out of most real estate licensing courses.? Not only do you need the piece of paper that says you have passed your state licensing test but you need financial backing, marketing and business skills.?? If you don't you may be one of the unfortunate agents who learn that real estate is a tough business.

So what were some of the skills that I uncovered that would be important factors for? my success in real estate??

Always Be Learning- don't stop at just earning your license and fulfilling your continuing education credits.?? Whether it is reading business journals, earning a real estate designation or being mentored by a senior agent, absorb everything you can about business & real estate.

Be Proactive-get out and make it known that you own a real estate business.? Yes the SOI is important but so are other professional business associations and community connections.? Don't get involved just to further your career.? Get involved because it is the right thing to do.? Your career will benefit.

Be Tenacious-successful business owners don't give up on the first try. There are always going to be people who say NO, just don't let it stop you from going to the next appointment.?

Have Passion-if you honestly enjoy what you do then your enthusiasm will show and be contagious.

Think Big?- if you don't have a business plan, write one!? Don't limit yourself to only thinking about getting your first deal or your 10th, consider where you want your business to be in 3, 5 and 10 years and work towards the plan.

Learn to Negotiate-don't be a bully. Your reputation is key to success in this business.? Whether it is with your clients or other agents if you are difficult to work with it will be known and it can affect your business.

Be Creative-think outside the box.? Find a niche.? Say why can't I do it that way?? Don't see limits, see possibilities.


Don't count on luck to make your real estate career a success.? If you work hard and take time to play, you will find owning a real estate business to be both a personally and financially rewarding.
