The Skinny on Fitness Blog: Fit on a Whim | Skinny Mom | Tips for ...

TanyaThurnau

I was so excited to stumble upon Fit on a Whim recently, and while on the page I read Tanya Thurnau?s journey. She was a driven college art student who found ?the man of her dreams,? graduated, promptly got married and was ready to start the ?perfect life? with the ?perfect man.? But, no dream job came knocking, and depression sneaked through the door. Tanya began gaining weight, her marriage unraveled, and she was left with a job waiting tables and a cycle of eating disorders: binging, purging, starvation?even laxatives. She simply wasn?t the confident, driven individual she used to be. But, in this rut, she found her true passion and calling through fitness. Fit on a Whim has everything from workouts to nutritional guides, and a great sense of support. Tanya has ?been there, done that? with excuses and poor health habits so, she can truly relate to that hopeless feeling. But, she also knows the meaning of responsibility. Read on to find out how Tanya battled depression and found her new addiction: workout sneakers.

1.??? What inspired you to start writing your blog? My interest in health and fitness was initially inspired by my desire to live healthier and be a role model for my family. I come from a family that struggles a lot with weight ? primarily the women. I?ve witnessed the physical and mental side effects that weight can have on the people I care about the most, and it breaks my heart. My own past has also involved unhealthy habits such as starvation, laxatives, binging, purging, and over-exercising to deal with my own struggles. I decided I needed to find a better solution, and I wanted to create a healthier future for my family. I became proactive and began learning anything and everything I could about health, fitness, and nutrition. Through the process, I found that a healthy lifestyle put my life back together, gave me loads of energy, and created the balance and peace I needed. I realized the problem was much bigger than my family and decided to become a Certified Fitness Trainer. Training then led to working towards my Specialist in Sports Nutrition Certification. I?ll continue to learn and help as long as I can. My belief is that if other women give health and fitness a chance, they can find a cure for whatever it is they?re struggling with.

2.??? What is your favorite aspect about being part of an online blogging community? I love being a part of an online community! It allows me to engage with others across the country, and even the world, that I wouldn?t have the opportunity to connect with in any other situation. It allows me to network with and learn from others who do what I do as a profession and help, educate, and motivate women who desire to transform their lives through the lifestyle services and information I share. It?s a beautiful thing!

3.??? What is your favorite topic to blog about??Oh boy?there are so many fun and important topics to write about, so it?s hard to choose just one. If I had to choose, I guess I really enjoy busting myths and educating women on the realities of what a healthy lifestyle really looks like. We?ve grown up so misguided by media with quick fixes, advertisements, and loads of misinformation. It?s definitely not an easy task trying to reverse all the myths and misconceptions, but it?s fun writing about them and rewarding when woman value and appreciate the information I share.

4.??? In your opinion, what is the best feature on your blog??I?d have to say the Online Training Programs. Each person has a different body type, fitness level, vision for their outcome, etc., and women also have to deal with additional challenges that men don?t. Because of this, Fit on a Whim takes a tailored approach on a client by client basis. The programs focus not only on the physical workouts and nutrition, but on program prep and mindset. Without a plan for encountering obstacles, understanding your triggers, setting goals, and having realistic expectations for your transformation, many women can become overwhelmed, lose focus, and quit. Fit on a Whim isn?t just about physical transformations, but about support, education, simplicity, and creating strong, confident, and happy women through a permanent and doable lifestyle! I also hold shorter online challenges on a regular basis with additional group support, prizes, and accountability!

5.??? Where do your fitness routines come from??I create fitness routines for myself. As a Fitness Trainer, I love the challenge of creating new workouts and routines for myself and my clients. It almost becomes a game. I like to see how long I can go without creating the same routine twice!

fitonwhim6.??? What advice do you have for moms and women on getting a workout in with a busy schedule? I?ve learned there?s a common misconception that if you don?t have an hour or more to do a workout, it?s not worth doing. More time doesn?t necessarily mean better results. Less time just means more focus, efficiency, and intensity. Keeping your heart rate up and giving it all you?ve got with the time you have is important. If all you?ve got is 20-30 minutes, I recommend combining both weights and cardio, choosing multi-muscle exercises, and using a tabata format all in the same workout. You can easily do this on your lunch break at work, while your child is napping (if you?re a stay-at-home mom), when you wake up in the morning, or before you go to bed at night. It?s guaranteed to make you sweat and feel the burn!

7.??? What is your favorite exercise??My favorite exercise would probably be a weighted Russian Twist. It fires up every muscle in my core and I love that feeling. My abs are thankfully easy to train, so that definitely makes training them more enjoyable.

8.??? What are your fitness goals? I continually enjoy challenging my fitness level with exercises I find difficult. When I can?t do something, I?ll admit I get a bit frustrated, but it motivates me to work on it until I can do it! When I first began my fitness journey, push-ups and pull-ups were brutal! It was a sad spectacle, I?m sure. Haha. But now they?re a pretty regular staple in my routine. In addition to strength and performance, I?d love to build more muscle and achieve a 6-pack. I?ve always played with the idea of doing a figure or bikini competition one day, as well. The verdict is still out on that. I?m an extremely shy personality, but we?ll see where my ambitions lead!

9.??? What is your best tip on getting the most out of your workouts?? I?ve watched a majority of people in general working out at a gym trying to take the focus off of their workout with a distraction. Ahem?TELEVISION! Haha! So with that being said, my biggest piece of advice is to put your mind into the move and focus! Without focus you?re just going through the motions, coasting through, and letting yourself off the hook! Be present, bust out some tunes that pump you up, and work hard! You should be toast when you?re done! By doing this you?ll be surprised at the difference in your workouts and your progress.

10.??? What is your favorite fitness DVD or fitness class??I love anything that has to do with kickboxing or combat. A few of my favorite fitness DVD workouts and classes are Turbo Kick, Turbo Fire, Cardio Kickboxing, and Les Mills Combat. Martial arts inspired workouts never fail to make me sweat and feel empowered. Every woman should have a workout in her routine that makes her feel that way!

11.??? If you could have any celebrity be your personal trainer, living or dead, who would it be??I?d choose Chris Powell or Tony Horton. Chris Powell is a huge inspiration to me as a trainer. It would be incredible if I could learn to be even half the amazing trainer he is. And Tony Horton?well, Tony?s totally crazy and I kinda dig crazy! Haha! It would be incredible to have the opportunity to have either of them as MY personal trainer!
