Westwood in danger of joining Monty among golf?s nearly men

Lee Westwood was unable to end a wait of over 100 years for England to be responsible for both the US Open and Open Championship winners in the same calendar year and now the growing feeling is that he will never secure a major victory.

The one thing that Westwood cannot be criticised for is continually putting himself in the mix, as his third place at Muirfield was the eighth time since 2008 that he finished in the top three in a major.

Meanwhile, it was also the second time that he had led a major heading into the final round and ironically on both occasions it has been Phil Mickelson that has ended up topping the leaderboard.

It is now beginning to seem like destiny that Westwood will never win a major after so many close shaves and 2/7 is the price that he will end his career major-less.

He will certainly not be the first British player to fall short on the biggest stage despite their career deserving better, with Colin Montgomerie another suitable example.

Montgomerie won 31 European Tour events during his career, which is a total that only three players have bettered, and topped the European Order of Merit for seven successive years between 1993 and 1999.

He also finished in the top two of a major on five occasions and registered top-10 finishes five more times, but that sole victory eluded him.

Westwood is 5/2 to avoid positioning himself alongside Montgomerie among the nearly men and his next chance comes at the PGA Championship, where he has finished inside the top eight in two of his last three appearances.

Golf legend Gary Player is one person who does still believe that Westwood?s time will eventually come with his tweet ?I still believe Lee Westwood will win a major championship. Keep knocking on the door my friend & ignore the naysayers?.
